Team Penske is keeping Josef Newgarden in its IndyCar Series program for the foreseeable future.
The championship-winning organization announced Saturday a multi-year contract extension with Newgarden. The news follows his second consecutive Indianapolis 500 victory.
Team Penske did not divulge details of the extension that will keep Newgarden in the No. 2 Chevrolet.
“Josef Newgarden is a true winner, and we are excited that he will continue as a part of Team Penske for years to come,” said team owner Roger Penske in a statement.
“What he did Sunday in the Indianapolis 500 shows how Josef consistently delivers for our team and our partners on the track, and he is just as impressive off the track as well. We are proud to have Josef continue with our organization as his skill and passion embody what it means to be a Team Penske driver.”
Newgarden joined Team Penske ahead of the 2017 IndyCar Series season after stints with multiple other teams. The Tennessee native has since won 27 races and secured 43 podium finishes for Team Penske.
Along with race wins, Newgarden has also delivered the biggest prize in the sport. He won the IndyCar Series championship in 2017, his first year with Team Penske. Newgarden then won his second title in 2019.
Newgarden’s 30 career wins put him 13th on the all-time IndyCar Series wins list.
The veteran made Team Penske history this season by becoming the first driver to win the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the Indianapolis 500 in the same season.
He first worked alongside Matt Campbell, Felipe Nasr, and Dane Cameron in the prestigious endurance race in February. Newgarden then passed Pato O’Ward on the final lap of the Indy 500 to close out the month of May with a win.
Newgarden is seventh in the championship standings
The IndyCar Series drivers have completed five of the 17 races on this season’s schedule. Newgarden has won one of these races while putting himself in contention for his third title.
The Tennessee native is currently seventh in the IndyCar Series standings. Two-time IndyCar Series champion Alex Palou leads the standings with one win and two podiums.
Scott Dixon, Will Power, O’Ward, Colton Herta, and Scott McLaughlin are the other drivers ahead of Newgarden.
Plenty of time remains for Newgarden to put himself near the top of the championship standings. He has 12 races remaining in the season, starting with the Detroit Grand Prix on Sunday.
The schedule also includes two races at Iowa Speedway, the short track where Newgarden has won four times since 2020.
Newgarden can continue pursuing wins at Iowa and the other tracks without having to worry about his racing future.
“Driving for Roger Penske and this iconic team is a dream that I never thought I would realize,” Newgarden said in a statement. “I’m thankful for the opportunities that I’ve been given during my time at Team Penske. I have a great amount of respect for the individuals that comprise our group, including the partners who support us.
“Our time together has been filled with hard work, teamwork, and dedication; and I’m so excited that we will continue on for many more years to come. I’m sure that we can achieve much more in the future. I still believe we haven’t reached our full potential together just yet.”
