What Happened to the Original ‘Charlie’s Angels’ Cast?

When Charlie’s Angels original cast hit the ABC primetime lineup in 1976, this show shook up the television world. No one had seen a show like this one. Here, you have three women (Farrah Fawcett, Jaclyn Smith, and Kate Jackson) sharing the lead role spot. But their beauty was not hidden. It was flaunted as they wore evening gowns, bikinis, or pantsuits.

The term “jiggle TV” became synonymous with Charlie’s Angels. Executive producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg knew what they were doing in this action drama. Three beautiful private detectives, all of whom come from the police academy, work for Charlie Townsend.

We never see Charlie, who only speaks through a desktop speaker. (In real life, it’s John Forsythe before Dynasty providing his voice for the role).

Fawcett plays Jill Munroe, while Smith is Kelly Garrett and Jackson plays Sabrina Duncan. Fawcett, who was billed by her married name of Farrah Fawcett-Majors (she was married to The Fall Guy star Lee Majors for a bit), only stuck around for one season. Jackson stayed on board for three seasons, while Smith was there as a Charlie’s Angels original cast member for the show’s entire five-season run.

‘Charlie’s Angels’ Had Adjustments To Cast

Yes, Charlie’s Angels went through lineup changes. Cheryl Ladd, Shelley Hack, and Tanya Roberts also starred as “Angels” too. Of course, we cannot leave out David Doyle, who played Bosley, Townsend’s right-hand man. Doyle appeared in every episode of the TV series.

For this article, we’ll take a look at what happened to the original Charlie’s Angels cast member lineup.

Let’s start this out with Fawcett, who sadly died after battling colon cancer in 2009. Her death, though, coincided with Michael Jackson, who died 12 hours later. Fawcett, a native of Corpus Christi, Texas, had other recurring TV roles in Harry-O opposite David Janssen and The Six Million Dollar Man opposite Majors. She received four Primetime Emmy Award nominations and six Golden Globe Awards nominations. Fawcett also had one of the most iconic posters from the 1970s that is forever iconic. She also had numerous guest-star TV show appearances in her career as well.

Jackson happens to be a three-time recipient of Primetime Emmy Award nominations, along with four nominations from the Golden Globe Award. After her time on Charlie’s Angels, she would co-star with Bruce Boxleitner in Scarecrow and Mrs. King. Jackson added some TV movies to her resume. But Jackson has stayed away from television since 2009, not making one appearance on there. Yet in 2023, Jackson popped back into the public eye for old friend Smith’s son Gaston’s wedding. She’s also dealt with health issues, including cancer, in the past decades, too.

Smith played Kelly in all five seasons of Charlie’s Angels as an original cast member. She also made cameo appearances in two of the Charlie’s Angels movies. Starting in the 1980s, though, Smith started marketing her line of clothes and perfume. Other TV movie roles for Smith, a native of Houston, included Rage of Angels, George Washington, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, and Kaleidoscope. She’s been married four times, and with her current husband, Houston surgeon Brad Allen, since 1997.

David Doyle Found Other TV Roles

Doyle turned his role into other TV appearances. He popped on game shows of the day including Match Game, Super Password, Tattletales, and Password Plus. Doyle provided the first voice for Uncle Lou in Nickelodeon’s series Rugrats. He died from a heart attack in 1997. Doyle was 67 years old.

Forsythe, as we mentioned, went on to star in Dynasty alongside Joan Collins and Linda Evans. Earlier TV work included a star turn on Bachelor Father. He also hosted the TV series World of Survival. Forsythe’s film career included It Happens Every Thursday, The Trouble with Harry, and Topaz. He died from pneumonia in 2010 at 92 years old.

Charlie’s Angels went on to spawn several successful movies. They form their franchise and don’t look too hard for similarities between them and the TV show. Oh man, did this TV show bring in the guest stars? There are too many to name in total, but Phil Silvers and Barbara Stanwyck show up? Yes, they do, along with 40-50 other names.

This show was a smash hit, leaving when it just couldn’t maintain those high Nielsen numbers anymore.
