Liza Minnelli Reveals the Key to Getting ‘Old’ While Celebrating 78th Birthday

Liza Minnelli just celebrated her 78th birthday… but don’t tell Liza this.

Nope, Liza with a Z is finding some youthful vigor in her life. She’s been connecting with her own fountain of youth and it’s apparently helping her out quite a bit. While Minnelli has had her fair share of health concerns over the years, she has found a way to express thanks to her many fans.

“I am so grateful for all the good wishes and all the love that comes my way,” Minnelli said when talking with People. “Not only on my birthday, but always.”

Does Liza have a key thought or idea about getting older? She sure does. “I wish I knew how to act my age,” she said. “But kids guess what, I have never been this damn old! Just keep going baby, that’s the secret.”

Liza Minnelli Shares Photo With Parents

Minnelli’s comments also appeared in an article from Good Morning America. On Tuesday, she shared a photo of herself along with her father, movie director Vincente Minnelli, and her mother, actress-singer Judy Garland.

Speaking of her father, Minnelli also revealed in her chat with People some news. She’s planning to develop “multiple projects based on the intellectual property” of Vincente Minnelli. Liza is tentatively calling this work “Dreams My Papa Gave Me.”

Now, that seems like a lot of work. But she’s also getting back into singing. Minnelli said in her interview with People that she’s “recording music again.” When will Liza have an album or CD out? There’s no news about that at this time.

What a life Minnelli has lived, though. Being the daughter of a legend like Garland puts a lot of pressure on Liza. But there was a lot of love between both of them. In 1964, they both gave a rousing performance at the London Palladium. This show was captured on video and recorded, giving people something to hear these voices soar to the heavens. They were close with one another, though.

After Garland died from an accidental overdose in 1969, grief swarmed over Minnelli. She received a Valium prescription, but that turned into a dependency issue. It ultimately led Liza to go into rehab, where she also dealt with her alcoholism.

Minnelli Earns Oscar For Role In ‘Cabaret’

While that role brought her an Oscar nomination, she did win one in 1972 for playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Minnelli does have a lot of stage experience in her career, too.

A lot has been made over the years about Minnelli’s marriages and relationships over the years. She has been married to Peter Allen, Jack Haley Jr., Mark Gero, and David Gest. Minnelli was engaged to Desi Arnaz Jr. and Peter Sellers. Then, people she has been connected to romantically include Rock Brynner, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Billy Stritch, and Martin Scorsese.

Throughout her life, though, Minnelli has not had any children.

These days, Minnelli has been seen in public with pianist and musician Michael Feinstein. One of her most recent on-camera interviews included her and Feinstein in a segment on CBS’s Sunday Morning.

There are very few singers or entertainers alive who connect to “old school” ones. Minnelli is one of those and fans still remember her sharing the stage with Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. She joined their tour in the late 1980s when Dean Martin decided to leave the tour and go back home.

Knowing that Liza Minnelli is doing her best to stay active is pretty impressive. Let’s hope that she can pull this off at 78 years old.
