Volkswagen has taken steps to up the “fun factor” of its SUV line. The automaker has unveiled a Tiguan boasting a turbocharged engine.
According to VW, the Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo is the top trim level of the SUV for the 2026 model year. This updated model takes the features from the 2025 Tiguan but adds a more powerful version of the EA888 evo5 turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter TSI engine.
This 2.0-liter engine adds 67 horsepower, taking the number to 268 at 5500 rpm. The engine delivers 258 lb-ft of torque between 1900 and 5400 rpm.

VW paired the powertrain with an automatic 8-speed transmission with steering-mounted paddle shifters. The Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo includes 4Motion all-wheel drive.
VW achieved this increase by installing a large turbocharger, strengthening pistons and connecting rods, and optimizing the chain drives for cams and oil pump. Additionally, VW has raised the fuel injection pressure from 5,076 psi (350 bar) to 7,252 psi (500 bar).
The SUV may be more powerful for 2026, yet it actually weighs 170 pounds less than the outgoing model. VW achieved this through the use of lighter materials and by changing the braking system.
The Tiguan SEL R-Line Turbo features multiple interior updates

The engine and the chassis were not the only parts with updates for the 2026 model year. VW also altered the interior. One of the biggest changes was moving the gear shifter onto the steering column to increase the size of the center storage console.
The updates continue with American walnut wood décor and upgraded Varenna leather seats. The top-of-the-line SEL R-Line Turbo adds massaging seats with ventilation and a heated steering wheel. The rear outboard seats are heated.
The SEL R-Line Turbo adds a 3-zone Climatronic Touch automatic climate, ambient lighting, and a heads-up display. Audiophiles will have access to a 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
The majority of Tiguan trim levels come standard with a new version of Volkswagen’s 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro system. The SEL R-Line Turbo comes standard with a 15.0-inch display.
Volkswagen did not provide pricing or availability details for the new line of Tiguan SUVs. The automaker will make these announcements closer to the official launch this fall.
