Toyota has expanded the GR Corolla lineup for 2025, adding a model with an automatic transmission with paddle shifters.
The 2025 hot hatch lineup features three models — Core, Premium, and Premium Plus. All three have a six-speed manual transmission with push button-activated rev-matching. The eight-speed Gazoo Racing direct automatic transmission is a $2,000 optional add-on.
Every model in the GR Corolla lineup features a G16E-GTS 1.6 liter 3-cylinder turbo engine. This powertrain produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, an increase over previous model years.
According to Toyota, track driving inspired its hot hatch. Rally and racing drivers tested the GR Corolla on a variety of courses around the world. This includes Fuji International Speedway.
As a result, Toyota re-tuned the suspension to improve the experience when cornering. The carmaker also redesigned the front bumper to fit the optional sub-radiator. Space also exists for the Automatic Transmission Fluid cooler, which is only available with models featuring DAT.
Some of the testing featured the TGR World Rally Team and specifically focused on the automatic transmission. This eight-speed unit went through testing in Finland as drivers took the hot hatch onto snow-covered roads. It also underwent testing in multiple racing series, such as the Japan Rally Championship.
The GR Corolla features standard all-wheel drive and multiple drive modes. This includes Normal, Gravel, and Track. Each mode has a specific torque distribution to the front and rear wheels.
For example, the distribution is 50-50 on gravel and 60-40 on normal. Track mode continuously changes the distribution based on driver input and vehicle status.
The manual transmission models also underwent some changes. Toyota updated the clutch system to provide a “snappier” feel.
Each GR Corolla has driver-focused standard features
Each trim level of the GR Corolla includes standard features focused on improving the driving experience.
This consists of an 8-inch touchscreen controlling multimedia and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster with a customizable layout sits behind the steering wheel.
Each Toyota includes standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. This includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.
Safety Sense 3.0 also features Automatic High Beams, Road Sign Assist, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist rounds out the list of features.
The Toyota GR Corolla will arrive at dealerships this fall. The suggested starting price is $38,860. This does not include the dealer processing and handling fee of $1,135.
