Nissan has unveiled the next generation of its midsize Frontier pickup, which will launch in China before its export to other nations.

This Frontier is different than a standard pickup, considering it is Nissan’s first-ever plug-in hybrid. It is also Nissan’s first electrified pickup.

The Frontier features a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder internal combustion engine and a transmission-mounted, high-output electric motor. Nissan paired the powertrain with a 5-link rear suspension and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system.

The Frontier boasts four drive modes depending on what the owner needs. The options include Hybrid, Pure electric, Performance, and Snow.

The pickup includes multiple features built for adventures. According to Nissan, the pickup has roof rails for mounting cargo. It also has an electronic retractable cover for the cargo bed.

Nissan says that the Frontier plug-in hybrid will go on sale in China before the end of the year. The automaker will provide export details in the future.

The Frontier drew inspiration from a classic design

When Nissan unveiled its first plug-in hybrid Frontier, it included a photo of the classic pickup. The purpose was simple — to show the source of inspiration.

This 2026 model is not a recreation, but it uses modern elements to pay tribute. Specifically, Nissan put three LED lights above the grille to harken back to the three openings in the hood of the 1980s Frontier.

Similarly, Nissan divided the grille into three sections. This also bears similarities to the original Hardbody pickup.

While the exterior channels a classic pickup, the interior of the plug-in hybrid embraces modern technology. The Frontier has available features such as front seat heating, ventilation, and seat-back massage. The pickup also has a panoramic roof as standard.

The driver has access to the 10-inch LCD instrument panel mounted directly behind the steering wheel. The center of the dashboard has a 14.6-inch infotainment screen for music and other necessities.
