‘Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay Shares Special Way She Honors Her Mother Jayne Mansfield

‘Law & Order: SVU’s Mariska Hargitay Shares Special Way She Honors Her Mother Jayne Mansfield

Fashion and style are two things that Mariska Hargitay can rock, even in saluting her late mother, Jayne Mansfield. Hargitay, the longtime star of Law & Order: SVU, showed up for a visit on Today on Thursday morning. While talking about things, Hargitay noticed a bow on host Savannah Guthrie’s head. In turn, Guthrie noticed one on Hargitay’s head as well.

“Wait a minute. Can we just talk about your sweet bow?” Hargitay said to Guthrie. Then Guthrie said, “Can we talk about your sweet bow?” Both women turned toward the camera to give viewers a better look. Then, they showed off their bows.

Guthrie said that Hargitay was the inspiration behind an upcoming Today show segment about hair bows. Hargitay, though, countered with a little surprise reveal.

Jayne Mansfield Photo Inspires Mariska Hargitay

“Well, can I tell you who my (inspiration) is?” Hargitay said. “So I just found this photo of my mother when she was 8 years old and I brought it today.” Then they showed Mansfield in a black-and-white portrait. She was wearing two bows in her hair at the time of the photo.

“Look at her bows!” Guthrie said. Hargitay replied, “Look at her bows! And it just undid me, this photo of this little precious girl. And I was like, ‘You are my inspiration.’” Guthrie then said, “It’s beautiful, everything about it.”

Hargitay then said that Guthrie was her inspiration since seeing her wear the bows on the air. Guthrie even suggested co-host Hoda Kotb wear one. Kotb replied, “I just don’t think I can handle a bow.” Then Hargitay spoke up, offering some advice and wisdom.

“Here’s the deal,” she said. “You don’t put yourself in a box. You wear a bow and you rock it.”

Taking some style points from Mansfield is pretty cool for Hargitay to do. Mansfield was a blonde bombshell who made men lose their sense of balance when seeing her. Yes, she was that beautiful and left behind a resume of work. Mansfield died in a horrific auto accident in 1967.

Pink Gown Also Helps Actress Honor Mother

Back in 2021, Hargitay put on a pink gown and wore it to Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards. She honored Mansfield in this way. “The pink does have great significance because I’m bringing my mother with me tonight, and she’s here,” Hargitay said at the time. “She was one of the most glamorous women in the world, and I just hope that I can do her justice.”

Hargitay was 3 years old when her mother died. In an interview with Glamour, Hargitay talked about growing up without her mother. “I think I learned about crisis very young, and I learned very young that s— happens and there’s no guarantees, and we keep going,” she said. “And then we transform it.

“That’s been kind of my superpower, and the gift of having trauma early in life,” Hargitay said. “I’ve spent the last 50 — how old am I? — 57, so 54 years sort of trying to figure out what happened and why, and what am I supposed to do with it?”

Law & Order: SVU is celebrating its 25th anniversary this season. Is there going to be a crossover between Benson (Hargitay) and Stabler (Chris Meloni) this season? Fans have been wanting them to be an item forever it seems like. Maybe Dick Wolf will let the fans have their time in the sun.
