General Motors has issued a recall affecting thousands of Cadillac and Chevrolet models. The issue is the transmission.

According to the recall document, the recall is for models featuring the 10-speed automatic transmission. This includes the 2020-21 Cadillac CT4, 2020-21 CT5, 2019-20 CT6, and 2020-22 Chevrolet Camaro. GM estimates that this recall affects 90,081 vehicles.

The vehicles with other transmission options do not have this concern.

“A transmission control valve in some of these vehicles may be susceptible to excess wear over time, resulting in a gradual loss of pressure within the valve that can cause harsh shifting. In rare cases, the wheels may experience a momentary lock up,” the recall document states.

The harsh shifting is an early indicator for owners of the affected Cadillac and Chevrolet models.

Vehicles affected:

  • 2,235 Cadillac CT4s with a 10-speed transmission
  • 27,097 Cadillac CT5s with a 10-speed transmission
  • 10,602 Cadillac CT6s with a 10-speed transmission
  • 50,147 Chevrolet Camaros with a 10-speed transmission

The fix, which GM will provide reimbursement for as part of this process, features the installation of new transmission control module software. This will “monitor valve performance and detect excess wear approximately 10,000 miles before a wheel lock up condition could occur.”

GM states that the new software will limit the transmission to fifth gear. This will prevent the possibility of the wheels locking up when downshifting from eighth gear. A message will also appear on the instrument panel along with a service engine light.

GM began notifying dealers of the issue on March 6, 2025. The company will begin notifying affected vehicle owners on April 21, 2025, provided they have a remedy available.

The recall document states that the automaker corrected this condition in production of future models. The 2021 CT6, 2022 CT4, 2022 CT5, and 2023 Camaro all received new transmission control software that detects excessive wear.
