Bob Dylan’s Children: All About the Musician’s Artistic Sons and Daughters

Bob Dylan’s Children: All About the Musician’s Artistic Sons and Daughters

Bob Dylan is known around the world for his legendary music career, but to his children, he’s known simply as dad.

Through two marriages, Bob Dylan has fathered six children, the first of whom he came by through marriage. After tying the knot with his first wife, Sara Lownds, in 1965, he adopted her daughter Maria.

Bob Dylan and Sara would go on to have four more children through their 12-year marriage: Jesse, Anna, Sam, and Jakob. In his second marriage to backup singer Carolyn Dennis, he added a sixth child to his brood, a daughter, Desiree.

By all accounts, Bob Dylan and each of his wives raised their children in a normal atmosphere free of celebrity trappings. Why was this so? According to Dennis, it was to keep their childhoods as normal as possible, despite their famous father.

“Bob and I made a choice to keep our marriage a private matter for a simple reason — to give our daughter a normal childhood. Bob has been a wonderful, active father to Desiree,” she explained in a 2001 statement.

Music Legend Bob Dylan is a Doting Father

Bob Dylan has been open about his feelings towards his children and fatherhood. He wrote about this part of his life in a 2004 memoir titled Chronicles: Volume One.

“Having children changed my life and segregated me from just about everybody and everything that was going on,” Dylan wrote. “Outside of my family, nothing held any real interest for me.”

He also gets pretty high marks from his kids. Jakob, whom many know from his connection with the band The Wallflowers, once told The New York Times: “When I was a kid, he was a god to me for all the right reasons. He never missed a single Little League game I had.”

“He’s collected every home run ball I ever hit. And he’s still affectionate to me.” Jesse added his two cents when speaking with the British newspaper The Times, saying, “My dad’s great, he’s a totally kind, wonderful man. He’s been nothing but supportive to me and my brothers and sisters.”

What About the Rest of Bob Dylan’s Children?

Bob Dylan’s remaining five children have largely stayed away from the spotlight. Thanks to their famous father, however, we know a little about each.

Maria has spent most of her life writing and publishing poetry. She married musician Peter Himmelman in August 1988, and they share four children. Nowadays, they live in Santa Monica, California, after moving from New York.

As a child, Jesse spent time on the road with his father in the Rolling Thunder Revue days. Later in life, he turned his attention toward being a director after studying film at New York University.

Jesse directed a number of music videos, including an Emmy Award-winning one for will.i.am titled Yes We Can. Large-scale commercials also are a part of his resume, along with feature films. He’s married to actress Susan Traylor and they have two children, Feury Mae and Pablo.

Anna and Sam Dylan Keep Their Lives Private

One of Bob Dylan’s middle children, Anna, has stayed out of the public eye, not even speaking in public about her famous father.

Sam, in his own way, shies away from the spotlight, too. His wife Stacy, however, shares photos from their life on Instagram. They are the parents of two children, Jonah and Lowell. When Lowell was a young child, he was diagnosed as having Crohn’s disease. Out of that, Stacy created a non-profit titled Connecting to Cure Crohn’s and Colitis.

Jakob was born in New York City, but headed to Los Angeles with his family when he was still a young child. When he got older, Jakob moved back to the Big Apple. He ultimately dropped out of school, then focused on music and found success with his band The Wallflowers. He shares four children with his wife, Paige Dylan.

“In the back of my mind, I always knew I was going to end up gravitating to songwriting,” he told The Washington Post in 1997.

Desiree, the youngest of Bob Dylan’s children, also has spent time in her life performing, albeit in the form of acting, sharing stage time with such luminaries as Dick Van Dyke and Chaka Khan. She’s also appeared in television shows like Modern Family, NCIS, and Good Girls.
