Svengoolie Drops by ‘Hanging with Doctor Z’, Answers Pressing ‘Three Stooges’ Questions

Svengoolie recently dropped by the Hanging with Doctor Z studio where the duo chatted about classic monsters… and the Three Stooges. Since the late 1970s, Svengoolie has been Chicago’s horror icon. It began airing nationally on MeTV in April 2011, gaining an even larger following.

Meanwhile, Doctor Z is Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes. He has an old-school talk show now. Just go with it.

When the esteemed Svengoolie dropped by to ghoulishly gab with Dr. Z, the good Doctor spared no time with the tough questions. “Now, let me get this out of the way,” Doctor Z began. “Whenever I see someone wearing a top hat I assume it’s hiding a vestigial twin growing out of their scalp. Prove me wrong,” the ape with a Ph.D. demanded.

Sheepishly, Sven complied. For perhaps the first time in his decades-long career, he removed his famous top hat, revealing nothing but flowing, raven locks. “I imagine that there’s like a top hat and mascara store and it’s just you and Alice Cooper once a week,” Dr. Z then quipped.

However, Dr. Z continued to press on. “Do you have a favorite horror movie?”, he asked Sven. Unsurprisingly, the horror host revealed his love of the classics. “I do really like the original Universal [Studios] first movies of Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, the werewolf [Sven, on the spot, likely meant The Wolf Man here] Dracula, The Mummy.”

Finally, Doctor Z put forth the most ruthless line of questioning he could towards Svengoolie. “F, marry, kill. Moe, Larry, and Curly… go,” the ape demanded. Sven, a huge lover of the Three Stooges, only coyly chuckled at the question. However, Sven did go into detail about the themes of the Stooges’ short films, and delighted in the gag of Curly being set off by a secret word.

The Men Behind Doctor Z and Svengoolie

Seeing these two play the above sketch straight is a real treat for pop culture fans. Let’s take a minute to pull back the curtain for these performers.

Since 2021, comedian and writer Dana Gould has been the star of Hanging with Doctor Z. It’s both a send-up and a loving homage to talk shows of a bygone era. Think of it as the lovechild of Space Ghost Coast to Coast and 70s era The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.

The normally 10 to 15-minute-long episodes, uploaded to YouTube, showcase Gould transformed into Dr. Zaius from Planet of the Apes as he engages with a variety of comedian, actor, and musician friends. Gould has been playing a version of this character for quite some time. He even appeared as Dr. Z for a TCM presentation of Planet of the Apes for Fathom Events.

Of course, Svengoolie has been an institution for decades. The show features horror and sci-fi films hosted by Svengoolie. Originally played by Jerry G. Bishop from 1970 to 1973, Rich Koz took over in 1979. Svengoolie presents sketches, jokes, and parody songs related to the films before and after breaks. Horror fans can catch Sven every Saturday night on MeTV.
