‘The Andy Griffith Show’: Barney Fife’s 5 Greatest Moments

When it comes to characters on The Andy Griffith Show, there’s one among many who stand out and it’s Barney Fife. Sheriff Andy Taylor’s devoted deputy, played by Don Knotts, does his best to perform his duties. There are many different scenes and situations that come to mind when thinking about Fife. Here are five of the greatest moments for Barney Fife on the sitcom.

Citizen’s Arrest

Gomer Pyle, played by Jim Nabors, decides to get back at Barney by making a citizen’s arrest. See, Barney ticketed Gomer for an illegal U-turn. Well, when Gomer sees Barney Fife doing the same dang thing, he takes matters into his own hands. Hilarity does ensue as they deal with the matter.

Barney’s First Car

While we may have seen Barney drive the squad car, he didn’t have one of his own. Until now. Barney takes all of his life’s savings and purchases a car. He’s proud of it and takes everyone out for a ride. Alas, though, the car gives out and it turns out to be a lemon.

Barney Gets His Man

While walking down Main Street in Mayberry, Barney Fife accidentally captures a wanted fugitive. State officers get the man again, but he threatens to get the deputy at some later time. It turns out that he escapes from prison and just might be paying Barney a visit.

The Pickle Story

OK, this one involves Barney, Andy, and even Opie gets into the action. Aunt Bee is over the moon about her pickles and she’s hopefully going to win this year at the fair. To get there, though, Andy and Barney Fife eat all of her pickles so she thinks they are good. They eat a LOT of pickles. By the way, this episode is Knotts’ personal pick as his favorite.

Barney and the Cave Rescue

Barney, Thelma Lou, Andy, and Helen go out for a picnic. They come across an old cave. Andy and Helen go in while Barney stalls. Once they are in there, a rockslide happens and blocks Andy and Helen from the entrance. Barney Fife hurries back into town and gets things together. As it turns out, Andy and Helen found a way out. But they didn’t want to embarrass Barney, so they go back into the cave. Fife saves the day and the city is so happy for him. So are Andy, Thelma Lou, and Helen.
