‘Prison Break’ Reboot Officially in the Works, Fans React

Prison Break, the cult favorite show that ran from 2005 to 2009 with a revival in 2017, is getting a reboot. Of course, fans are weighing in. Hulu is developing the reboot based on the beloved Fox drama. The new series, created by Elgin James, the co-creator and showrunner of Mayans M.C., is set in the same world but features different characters.

Prison Break aired on Fox from 2005 to 2009. It follows Dominic Purcell as a man wrongly sentenced to death and Wentworth Miller as his brother who devises a prison escape plan. The series received a Golden Globe for Best Television Drama in its first season.

Fans Weigh in on the ‘Prison Break’ Reboot

Fans seem to have mixed emotions about a Prison Break reboot. The pop culture Twitter account Every Movie Plug shared the news, sending rumbles through social media. Most fans of the show seemed upset that it wouldn’t feature the original characters played by Purcell and Miller.

“The new season is without Scofield and Lincoln. I ain’t watching it,” one fan wrote. Another Prison Break lover agreed. “It’s going feature new characters guys, we likely won’t be getting Micheal and other familiar faces,” they opined.

Still, other Prison Break fans feel like the show ended strongly and shouldn’t have a reboot. “We’re kinda okay with how it ended. Don’t ruin it,” a fan insisted. Others agreed with this assessment. “Yo!, Can you say that again please,” another fan responded.

Why Wentworth Miller Returning to ‘Prison Break’ is Unlikely

Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell returned for a revived fifth season in 2017. However, Fox’s plans for another installment were scrapped in 2019. The series also spawned a TV movie, The Final Break, and a short-lived mobisode spinoff, Prison Break: Proof of Innocence.

Entertainment Weekly pointed out a now-deleted Instagram post from Wentworth Miller about why he is passing on being involved. It seems the actor, who is a gay man, wants to avoid playing straight roles. He also believes the Prison Break characters are played out. “I’m out. Of PB. Officially,” the actor quipped. “Not [because] of static on social media (although that has centered the issue). I just don’t want to play straight characters. Their stories have been told (and told).”

Miller added, “No more Michael. If you were a fan of the show, hoping for additional seasons… I understand this is disappointing. I’m sorry.”
