A familiar face is returning to Frasier for their Christmas episode. Peri Gilpin returns as Roz, a cornerstone to his days in Seattle. For all 11 seasons of the original sitcom, which aired from 1993 to 2004, Gilpin portrayed Roz Doyle, the producer of Dr. Crane’s radio show.
It has been two decades since the last appearance of Roz and Frasier together in the original Frasier series, which concluded in 2004. However, in the reboot on Paramount+, Roz surprises Frasier during a somber Christmas, marking his first without his late father Martin (portrayed by the late John Mahoney, who passed away in 2018).
Peri Gilpin ‘Loved’ Returning for the ‘Frasier’ Christmas Episode
Gilpin was thrilled to return to the role. “I just loved getting to do it,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “It was a fantasy come true to play that part again and to go back into that world. And there’s bittersweet things because it makes me so sad when I think about John. I miss him. He was a great friend, but I feel like they dealt with that.”
She added, “They go back to John every chance they can and they refer back. They refer back to Cheers. They refer back to our first Frasierand I feel like we’re kind of a part of it. It felt very comfortable there and wonderful and it was really funny. It’s like a comfort when you watch it. You’re like, ‘Oh my gosh, I get to see this again. It’s new, it’s fresh, but I am getting the same feelings I got from watching it the first time.’”
In the season finale Christmas episode, it’s Frasier’s son, Freddy, who calls in Roz. Freddy realizes she’s the right person to bring Dr. Crane out of his holiday funk.
“[Roz and Frasier] had a great, great friendship and both of them needed that friendship,” Gilpin explained “I think he was like her older brother and she could always go to him. And those friendships are very, very hard to come by, you realize.”
Of course, Gilpin’s Roz isn’t the only old pal to make their way to Boston on the Frasier reboot. Recently, his old flame Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) rolled in like a thundercloud. The return was for another festive event: Freddy’s birthday. However, after hijinks, Frasier and Lilith decided to split special occasions. One can only assume Dr. Crane spent Thanksgiving alone…
