‘Little House on the Prairie’ Cast: Where Are They Now?

In an age and time where family television remained quite popular, Little House on the Prairie and its cast found a soft landing place. The show reflected some of the themes raised in the Laura Ingalls Wilder books.

Michael Landon was pretty much in control of the whole process here. He put together a nice, sweet show that tackled real-life problems for its time. Little House on the Prairie developed a devoted following on NBC. Generations have grown up watching Melissa Gilbert, Melissa Sue Anderson, and Alison Arngrim own their characters.

Many years have passed since this show originally ran on network television. It has remained popular, though, through syndication. Some of the show’s stars still interact with fans at conventions or other events. With that said, where are the cast members of Little House on the Prairie now?

Where’s the Cast of ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Now?

Michael Landon

Let’s start with Michael Landon, who played Charles Ingalls. Landon made sure that Charles was a hard-working, devoted husband and father. He made sure to help out his fellow residents in Walnut Grove, too. Landon had a reputation from his days on Bonanza where he wanted to change scripts and scenes. He couldn’t get much done there. So, he made sure his changes were done on Little House on the Prairie. Sadly, Landon died from pancreatic cancer in 1991.

Melissa Gilbert

Melissa Gilbert portrayed Laura Ingalls. While Landon may have gotten the lead spot in the show’s credits, Gilbert was this show’s true star. She appeared in all the original series shows and a few TV movies connected with it, too. “Half Pint,” her character’s nickname from Charles, was always energetic and inquisitive. Laura let the home viewer see life through her perspective at times, too. Gilbert stays active on social media, letting people know what she’s up to or where she’s going to be. Gilbert is married to actor Timothy Busfield.

Melissa Sue Anderson

Melissa Sue Anderson played Mary Ingalls. As the older sister on Little House on the Prairie, she attacked her role with gusto. Anderson earned an Emmy nomination for her work. She ended up leaving the show before its run ended. As Mary, Anderson very capably played a blind person. She even worked behind the scenes on a couple of Landon’s projects after the show ended. Anderson is not active in show business anymore.

Karen Grassle

Karen Grassle portrayed Caroline Ingalls. Grassle first established herself as a stage actress in the 1960s. But she ended up going on an audition for Little House on the Prairie. As it turns out, Grassle was the right actress appearing at the right time. As Caroline or “Ma,” the character proved to be influential with the TV family. Grassle returned to theater work once the show ended. But she would occasionally make a pop-up turn on a few other shows. The Little House on the Prairie star is now in her 80s.

Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush

Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush played Carrie Ingalls. The twins were on the show first when they were 4 years old. Once the show ended, the Greenbush twins pretty much said goodbye to show business. In the past few years, either Lindsay or Sidney has appeared in cast reunion shows and podcasts, but they’re not acting anymore.

Alison Arngrim

Alison Arngrim played Nellie Oleson. What a little antagonist! Nellie managed to cause a lot of trouble for Laura all the time on Little House on the Prairie. It finally reached a boiling point when Laura and Nellie infamously had a water battle. These days, Arngrim will occasionally go to a fan convention or Comic-Con and meet people. After the show ended, she became an AIDS activist. The Little House on the Prairie star is honing her craft as a stand-up comedian now, too.

Richard Bull

Richard Bull portrayed Nels Oleson. Before his Little House turn, Bull built up some TV credibility. He played Doc on Irwin Allen’s Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea alongside Richard Basehart. Reportedly, Bull first met Landon on the set of Bonanza and had a connection with him already. Bull died in 2014 at 89 years old.
