With the first season of the Frasier reboot in the books, David Hyde Pierce still believes his choice to not return is a good one. Pierce, who played Niles Crane opposite Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane, talked about his decision with the Los Angeles Times.
“It’s not like I said, ‘Oh, I don’t ever want to do that again.’ I loved every moment,” Pierce said.
“It was that I wanted to do other things. And when we got into real talks about the reboot, I had just started on the Julia TV show and was working on a musical and going to do another musical. And I just thought, ‘I don’t want to be committed to a show and not be able to do stuff like this.’ And I also thought, ‘They don’t actually need me.’’Frasier has moved on to a new world. They have new characters. And I think I’m right. It’s doing great. And the new people they have are great.”
David Hyde Pierce Shared Similar Sentiments In 2022
As he mentioned, Pierce can be seen these days on the Max series Julia. But these sentiments that Pierce is sharing here are similar to the ones he offered up in November 2022.
“That whole time of my life [doing Frasier] is deeply important to me,” Pierce said at that time. “And I would never disrespect that in such a way as to say just offhandedly, ‘Oh, no, thanks. I’m not going to do that again.’ It’s very valuable to me. But by the same token, because it’s so valuable to me, I also wouldn’t do it just to do it. And I believe it can be done without me, too — finding new stories to tell, in the same way that Frasier did after Cheers.”
The new season on Paramount+ totaled 10 episodes. In the finale of Season One, Peri Gilpin reprised her role as Roz Doyle. Still, Pierce appears to be quite satisfied to just focus on his current TV project.
Peri Gilpin, Bebe Neuwirth Make Appearances
Grammer has taken his Frasier back to Boston, where he’s gained some new friends. Having Gilpin back on was quite touching. Roz and Frasier share a moment while remembering those who have passed on. As they raise their glasses, Roz says, “To Martin.” she’s referring to Martin Crane, played by the late John Mahoney.
If you start watching Frasier, then you might think that the gang on that show will go over to the Cheers bar. For his part, Grammer said no way. “We don’t want to desecrate a national monument,” Grammer told TVLine. “I’m not sure how we can have it live up to anything but a desecration… I think we honor it by excluding it.”
Frasier also is working on his relationship with his son Freddy, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott. Other new cast members include Toks Olagundoye, Jess Salguerio, Anders Keith, and Nicholas Lyndhurst. Earlier in the first season, Bebe Neuwirth appeared as Lilith Crane, Frasier’s ex-wife.
Now, all eyes are set to wait for a second season of the rebooted Frasier.
