What is Shawn Michaels Doing Now? All About the WWE Legend’s Life Outside of the Ring

During his WWE in-ring career, Shawn Michaels was one of the toughest and most controversial pro wrestlers of all time. He won numerous titles and formed an alliance with Triple H (Paul Levesque) named “Degeneration X.” Now that he’s retired from in-ring action, what is the legendary Michaels doing today?

Michaels has gone through some transformative changes. Today’s fans might recognize his name as being associated with NXT. Airing on Tuesday nights on USA Network, NXT showcases wrestlers working at the WWE Performance Center in Florida. Michaels works closely with coaches there, helping future WWE Superstars (pro wrestlers) learn the craft.

Born Michael Shawn Hickenbottom, he’s also known as HBK, initials for “The Heartbreak Kid.” Michaels’ official title is WWE Vice President of Talent Development Creative. Michaels does stay in touch with Levesque, who has a tough job being in the public eye more and more.

Shawn Michaels Takes New Direction In Life

While Michaels does tend to business in Florida, he occasionally shows up on other WWE programming.

Another big change in his life beyond the ring is his spiritual journey. Michaels is a devout Christian who seeks to live his life beyond wrestling according to that religion. He’s also married to Rebecca Curci and they have two children named Cameron and Cheyenne.

For the most part, Shawn Michaels is retired from active in-ring competition. Yet he’s been known to deliver a patented “Sweet Chin Music” super kick move at times. But he’s not looking to stir up a hornet’s nest leading to an in-ring return.

Back in 2023, Shawn Michaels talked with Busted Open Radio about being in NXT and what helped tame his wilder days. “Obviously, my wife and kids mellowed me out,” Michaels said, according to Wrestling Inc. “It’s also the Performance Center. It brings out that hunger and passion. And it’s at the beginning when you’re dealing with [young men and women] who just want to be pro wrestlers.”

“They’re not aware of the backstabbing and whatnot. They just want to [train] and the fact you’re getting paid is a bonus,” Michaels told Busted Open hosts Bully Ray and Tommy Dreamer. “I’ve been down the road many times. And I also feel like I can be a cautionary tale. I want to help people get through this process. They’re not gonna go through anything I haven’t.”

Shawn Michaels’ WWE Career Hasn’t Been Minus Controversy

As mentioned earlier, Michaels’ career has not been without controversy. Longtime WWE fans know of Michaels’ involvement in the “Montreal Screwjob.” In 1997 at WWE’s Survivor Series, a match between Michaels and Bret “The Hitman” Hart was to end with Hart winning. But the in-ring result was changed without Hart knowing it by former WWF Chairman Vince McMahon. Michaels was called the winner, got the WWF Championship belt, and left the Montreal arena.

Hart, a Canadian hero, and fans in the arena were beyond incensed at what happened.

Michaels’ name also has come up when people have talked about his bad attitude in his active days. He also suffered from physical injuries that ended up cutting a few years off of his career.

Michaels had an amazing feud against The Undertaker, ending in a memorable WrestleMania match.

Yet today, if anyone asked him about his career, Shawn Michaels could point out his championships as a singles and tag team wrestler. He also can raise up his work with NXT and his changed outlook on life as examples, too.
