Patrick Mahomes’ Mom Speaks Out on His Lucky Underwear, Fans Lose It

Last year was a strange one for Patrick Mahomes in the headlines. Rather than going viral for his performance on the field, the Chiefs quarterback disgusted NFL fans coast to coast with his bizarre pre-game ritual: donning the same pair of red underwear.

News surrounding the NFL star’s undergarments spiked again when Mahomes confirmed that the rumors were true. He really has worn the same pair of underwear at every game since his rookie year.

Now, Patrick Mahomes’ mom is speaking out about his uncomfortable, yet not unusual, superstition. On a recent episode of the Got It From My Momma podcast, Randi Mahomes set the record straight about his lucky drawers.

“I asked Brittany,” she explained. “It’s not that he wears them in the game. He wears them from point A — like leaves the house, gets to the game. I don’t think he actually wears them in the game.”

“Mahomes’ underwear will be smelling like tuna and bologna by the end of the Super Bowl,” another fan wrote. Even Travis Kelce, Patrick Mahomes’ teammate, couldn’t help but give a subtle jab toward his friend’s odd habit.

“I don’t think I’m superstitious,” he said in a pre-game press conference. “I like to live my life a certain way so I can get good things to happen to me. But I’m not wearing the same underwear or something like that.”

Patrick Mahomes Confirmed Lucky Underwear Rumors

On an episode of ESPN’s ManningCast with Peyton and Eli Manning, Patrick Mahomes himself admitted that he does, in fact, rock the same pair of underwear at every game. It all began back in 2017, he says, when his wife Brittany first bought the red boxers and he wore them to a game.

“First, my wife Brittany got them for me, so I’m not throwin’ y’all down, but I have to wear ’em, ya know,” Mahomes explained. “At the same time, I threw ’em on that first season [and] we had a pretty good season that season.”

Now, Patrick Mahomes insists that his red underwear isn’t “nasty” or “too worn down.” His other comments, however, suggest he might have bent the truth slightly with these claims.

“I only wear ’em for game day, though,” he said. “I clean ’em. I wash ’em. Every once in a while, at least. I mean, if we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash ’em, you know? I’ve gotta just keep it rolling.”

“As long as I’m winning football games, I’ll keep the superstition going,” Mahomes added.
