What Happened to Hilarie Burton? What the ‘One Tree Hill’ Star is Doing Now

Hilarie Burton has had quite an interesting career, with a lot of people still remembering her from One Tree Hill. Burton played Peyton Sawyer for six seasons on The WB/The CW from 2003-09. These days, she’s teaming up with her One Tree Hill costars Sophia Bush and Bethany Joy Lenz on the Drama Queens podcast.

After One Tree Hill ended its run, Burton had roles on White Collar, Grey’s Anatomy, Forever, and the TV series Lethal Weapon. Burton was born in Sterling, Virginia, in 1982. She has three brothers and an older half-sister from her father’s previous marriage.

Burton graduated from New York University in 2004, but she’d already made herself a big hit thanks to MTV. In 2000, Burton was hired by the music television network to be a video disc jockey (or VJ). Her role was to be on the network’s very popular Total Request Live. Initially, she was supposed to be a guest commentator. Producers, though, decided to offer her a full-time role.

Hilarie Burton Debuted On TV In ‘Dawson’s Creek’

Burton was a presenter on the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards along with MTV’s Iced Out New Year’s Eve. She made her television debut in 2002 thanks to an appearance on Dawson’s Creek.

This all led to Burton taking on her role as Sawyer on One Tree Hill. She even received some attention before premiering on there by appearing in different magazines. They included Maxim and People. When she was on the show, though, Burton was among the hot women pointed out by Maxim and Femme Fatales.

But she has had some real public situations around sexual harassment in her career. Going back to her days on TRL Uncensored, Ben Affleck is shown putting his hands on Burton’s breasts. Burton posted the clip on X (formerly Twitter) in 2017. That was around the time when news of the Harvey Weinstein sexual abuse cases first made headlines. Affleck did offer an apology to her in a post related to her post.

Also in 2017, Burton spoke out about being sexually harassed by One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn. In 2023, Burton even shared with People about an experience on Drama Queens when Schwahn wrote himself into an episode.

Actress Talks About On-Set Incident

Burton referred to Schwahn as “Voldemort,” a reference to a Harry Potter villainous character. She said that he decided to cast himself in a Season 5 episode titled Echoes, Silence, Patience, and Grace.

“I wasn’t speaking to him in real life, and so he wrote himself into the episode of me hugging him,” Burton told Bush and Lenz on the show. “That is so psychotic,” Lenz, 42, said. Bush, 41, said, “Can you guys imagine Shonda Rhimes or Aaron Sorkin casting themselves on their own show?”

As for her romantic life, Burton has been married to actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan since 2019. They have been together as a couple, though, and are the parents of two children.

Hilarie Burton has also been busy writing a couple of books about her life. She published The Rural Diaries: Love, Livestock, and Big Life Lessons Down on Mischief Farm in 2020. Then, in 2023, Burton published a memoir, Grimoire Girl: A Memoir of Magic and Mischief.

Her career and life appear to be in a good spot these days. Burton appears to be enjoying the podcasting game with her show co-stars, along with her family.
