Tony Danza Opens Up About Past Romance With ‘Taxi’ Costar Marilu Henner

Tony Danza Opens Up About Past Romance With ‘Taxi’ Costar Marilu Henner

More than 40 years after they parted ways, Tony Danza spoke about his five-year relationship with Taxi co-star Marilu Henner. The former couple dated from 1978 to 1983.

During a Taxi reunion on the set of The View, Danza reflected on the relationship and referred to Henner as his first “Hollywood girlfriend.”

“The problem is you don’t want your girlfriend to have a great memory,” he explained. ‘Don’t you remember?’ Of course, she does! She remembers everything, and so it’s just not something you want.”

Tony Danza previously spoke to PEOPLE about having a Taxi reunion on the daytime talk show. “Well, we’ve been getting together on Zoom every month for three, four years now and we see each other a lot,” he told the media outlet. “Danny [DeVito] and Marilu [Henner] were here doing a play in New York. Chris was in town. Carole [Kane] lives here so I see her a lot.”

Danza further explained that Judd Hirsch is considered the most energetic of the cast. “I don’t know how old he is. He’s incredible. In fact, he put together the get-together on The View.”

Marilu Henner Spoke to PEOPLE About Her Relationship With Tony Danza Last Year

During a 2022 interview with PEOPLE, Marilu Henner spoke about the relationship she and Tony Danza had in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s.

“Tony [Danza] and I had a hot little thing right away,” Henner explained. “I knew the first day we met something was going to happen.”

Although she and Danza parted ways without taking the relationship to the next level, Henner said they still talk all the time. “Sometimes when a relationship ends, it’s hard not to look back and think, ‘I’d like to stay close.’” she reflected. “I never stopped caring about people I once loved.”

Tony Danza spoke about Marilu Henner in 2014 stating that she was his first girlfriend in Hollywood. “So it was more than a working relationship,” he said. “Talk about mentoring, because Marilu is a mentor. They used to call her ‘the straw that stirred the drink.’”

Danza pointed out that Henner is who still gets the Taxi cast together. “She’s still the one who oftentimes is making sure that we stay in contact.”

The actor went on to add that he learned so much from Henner. “I grew up a lot with her, because I spent like my first six months with her in Hollywood, so she was a really good influence on me. And she was a lot of fun. We had a lot of fun together. To this day, she’s my soulmate, really. She really is.”
