Tom Selleck Debuts New Facial Hair Look and It’s NOT a Mustache

For years, fans of Tom Selleck have come to expect that he would be wearing his customary mustache on the TV. It’s been a part of the Selleck look for years. But some recent pictures happened to show a different look.

In photos that appeared in the New York Post, Selleck is wearing a beard.

Now you might think he’d stick with the mustache since Selleck is still a part of CBS’ police drama Blue Bloods. Yet with the strike that was going on, production on the show was shut down.

The Post photos show Selleck standing outside in the sunshine and also in his car. He looks pretty relaxed. At the time of these pictures coming out, Tom Selleck found himself still in California. That’s where he makes his home on his very large ranch.

Thanks to his own schedule on Blue Bloods, Selleck is able to fly home pretty regularly. The CBS show does all of its filming in New York City. Selleck goes back East, films the episodes, and then goes back home when it fits into his schedule. Last season, Abigail Hawk, who plays Abigail Baker on Blue Bloods, kept up with Selleck’s schedule. She said that she’s trying to make her schedule match, in some way, Selleck’s. That’s not a bad idea since Hawk’s scenes for Baker pretty much always involve Selleck’s Frank Reagan. Why would she do this? So that she could have her off time around the same time Selleck goes back west.

Back to Selleck’s mustache for a minute. People recognize him with it. He had it for all those years on Magnum, P.I. and has worn it in movies like Three Men and a Baby. It’s been Selleck’s calling card for a long time.

Fans might want to know if Selleck plans to shave the beard ahead of getting back to production work. While we don’t know for sure if it’ll happen, Selleck likes to keep a semblance of continuity around his character. So it probably will be expected that Selleck shaves the beard.

Photos also showed the beard had some gray in it, too. It’s hard to believe that the pretty much well-coiffed mustache would have a few gray hairs pop out of it.

Back in the 1970s, Selleck made a couple of appearances as private investigator Lance White on The Rockford Files starring James Garner. A younger Selleck was definitely rocking his mustache on those shows. Those appearances worked out so well that Universal Television, which produced Garner’s show at the time, ended up giving Selleck his own show. That, of course, was Magnum, P.I.
