The SNL cast offered a subtle and sweet tribute to former co-star Dana Carvey and his wife, Paula, days after the couple lost their son, Dex, to a drug overdose.
During the Nov. 19 Saturday Night Live episode, hosted by Jason Momoa, Weekend Update anchor Colin Jost simply head up a sign that read, “We love you, Dana and Paula.”
Dex, 32, died from an accidental overdose on Nov. 15. His girlfriend, Kaylee Chen, called 9-1-1 after Dex locked himself in the bathroom of his LA home. When first responders arrived, they discovered him unresponsive and pronounced him dead around 10 pm.
Dana Carvey Stepping Away From Entertainment Career
Dex Carvey had been following in his father’s footsteps with a budding entertainment career. He began acting in 2013 and earned credits in four projects, including Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser. He was also perfecting a stand-up comedy career. In 2016, he served as a warm-up comedian with his brother for his dad’s Netflix special, Dana Carvey: Straight White Male, 60. Most recently, he appeared in an episode of Dystopia Tonight with John Poveromo.
Following the loss, Dana Carvey thanked fans for their outpouring of support and announced that he would be stepping away from his comedy and acting career to focus on his family. He and Paula also share a son Thomas, 30.
“This is just to say thank you,” he wrote on X. “My wife and I have been overwhelmed by your love, your personal stories, your compassion. We received so many beautiful messages from people who knew Dex. These touched us more than we could ever express in words. I will be taking a break from work and social media–trying to figure out what life looks like now that we are a family of 3. We will heal the best we can and carry on. Our darling Dex would have wanted it that way. Much love, Dana.”
