Matthew Perry, who is best known for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, has reportedly died at the age of 54.
According to TMZ, the actor was found dead in his hot tub at his LA home on Saturday (October 28th). Sources told the media outlet that first responders were called to the residency on a call for cardiac arrest.
Prior to Friends, Matthew Perry appeared in the series Boys Will Be Boys. He was also on other popular TV sitcoms, including Who’s the Boss?, Growing Pains, and Beverly Hills 90210. After becoming a fan favorite on Friends, Perry scored major film roles such as Fools Rush In, The Kid, and 17 Again.
Although he never married, Perry had various widely public relationships over the years. He had dated Yasmine Bleeth as well as Julia Roberts, and Lizzy Caplan. He was recently engaged to literary manager, Molly Hurwitz. However, in 2021, he announced that he called off the engagement.
Matthew Perry Was Very Open About His Struggles With Drug Addiction Over the Years
Last year, Matthew Perry wrote about his drug addiction recovery in his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
“I wanted to share when I was safe from going into the dark side of everything,” Perry explained to People. “I had to wait until I was pretty safely sober – and away from the active disease of alcoholism and addiction – to write it all down. And the main thing was, I was pretty certain that it would help people.”
Matthew Perry also revealed at the time that he had almost died when he was 49 years old due to suffering from a gastrointestinal perforation. The Friends star said that it was brought on after his colon burst from opioid overuse. He had spent two weeks in a coma and five months at the hospital in recovery. He notably had to use a colostomy bag for nine months.
“The doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live,” Perry continued. “I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that’s called a Hail Mary. No one survives that.”
The actor went on to say that his alcohol addiction originally surfaced when he was working on Friends. “I could handle it, kind of. But by the time I was 34, I was really entrenched in a lot of trouble. But there were years that I was sober during that time.
Matthew Perry added that Season 9 of the show was when he was sober all the way through. “And guess which season I got nominated for best actor? I was like, ‘That should tell me something.’”
