A labor commissioner has ruled that Kelly Clarkson‘s ex-husband Brandon Blackstock overcharged her by millions of dollars. This was during a time when he served as Clarkson’s manager.
Legal documents obtained by TMZ indicate that Blackstock crossed the line as a manager. This happened when he booked gigs and inked deals for Kelly on The Voice, Norwegian Cruise Line, Wayfair, and as host of the Billboard Music Awards. While there are some exceptions to the rule, only agents — not managers — can lawfully secure roles for talent.
Blackstock collects fees for booking the gigs. But the labor commissioner ordered Blackstock to fork over those commissions to his former wife. They total $2,641,374.
As an aside, Blackstock picked up $1.98 million for commissions from her role on The Voice. By contrast, he only got $93.30 in commission for Clarkson hosting the Billboard Music Awards.
Blackstock said that he’ll appeal the ruling. One bright spot for him is this. Clarkson also wanted the money Blackstock got for scoring her the gig on her talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show. The labor commissioner begged to differ. Blackstock keeps whatever he has on that one.
Clarkson filed for divorce back in 2020 after 7 years of marriage. It was finalized in March 2022. As part of the settlement, Clarkson received their Montana ranch.
Kelly Clarkson Must Pay Child Support
Clarkson had to pay Blackstock $1.3 million. She is on the hook for $45k a month in child support for their 2 kids, ages 9 and 7. Blackstock also gets $115,000 a month in spousal support. That ends in January 2024.
Clarkson, repped by her attorney Ed McPherson, got the family pets. She also got multiple cars (including a Ford Bronco), a Ford F-250, and a Porsche Cayenne, as well as a flight simulator.
While Clarkson might be smiling about this ruling, she has another reason to flash her pearly whites. Ahead of Season 5 of The Kelly Clarkson Show, she and her crew moved from Los Angeles to the famed NBC Studios at Rockefeller Center.
For Clarkson, she felt like a move to a new place was needed. “At this point, I’m 40 years old. Mama rented something nice!” Clarkson says with a laugh during an interview with USA Today. Clarkson was sitting at a studio near her talk show’s new home at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. “I was like, ‘I’m not living here unless it’s right by the park and really nice for the kids.’”
Her divorce from Blackstock did play a major role in undertaking a change of address. “I’ll be real honest: I thought I was making a horrible decision,” Clarkson said. “I knew I needed a fresh start and couldn’t be in LA. I really wanted to be in Montana, but you can’t really do a show from there quite yet. So I was like, ‘The only other option would probably be New York.’”
