Julia Roberts an America’s sweetheart who dominated romantic comedies in the 90s. However, which of those flicks would she like a sequel to?
During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that aired Thursday, the Oscar-winning actress was put on the spot by a viewer demanding a sequel to one of her movies. Without skipping a beat, she confidently fired back with her pick.
“That’s a really good question and I’ve never been asked it,” Roberts remarked before choosing My Best Friend’s Wedding. Footage of her answer was shared on Instagram.
Released in June 1997, the comedy became a worldwide box-office sensation. Directed by P.J. Hogan, it tells the story of Jules, a food journalist who realizes her long-standing affection for her best friend Michael (played by Dermot Mulroney) when he announces his engagement to Kimmy (played by Cameron Diaz). Determined to win his heart, Jules embarks on a four-day mission to disrupt the wedding, even resorting to a fake engagement with her gay best friend George (played by Rupert Everett) out of sheer desperation.
Julia Roberts Might Have Some Ideas of Who Her Character Ends Up With in a ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel
Naturally, hijinks ensure and Jules doesn’t have a happy ending. Of course, Michael ultimately chooses Kimmy. However, the depth of the characters and their intricate dynamics provide ample material for a sequel, as Roberts revealed in a conversation with Andy Cohen.
“There’s so many people in it,” Julia Roberts pointed out. “[I would want] to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going…” When asked by another fan about Michael’s choice, Roberts remained loyal to her character and stood firmly by her decision. “Well, I mean, of course, Jules,” the Flatliners star insisted. “But he married Kimmy!”
In the same interview, Julia Roberts revealed some iconic roles that she passed on. She said that she had been offered the role played by Meg Ryan in You’ve Got Mail, but declined it. Additionally, she was also offered a part alongside Daniel Day-Lewis in the 1992 film The Last of the Mohicans.
“I can’t think of any else, but also there’s things that you don’t get like Meg Ryan was supposed to be in Steel Magnolias, and she was still filming When Harry Met Sally, so I got that part. Cate Blanchett was supposed to be in Closer, but she got pregnant, so then I got that part,” Roberts recalled. “So I’ve lucked into some good stuff.”
