Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon Reflect on Matthew Perry’s Passing

Jennifer Aniston wants people to know that Matthew Perry was really in a good spot before tragically passing away. Aniston talked about Perry’s death, among other subjects, with Reese Witherspoon in an interview for Variety.

“As he said he’d love to be remembered,” Aniston said. “He was happy. He was healthy. (And) he had quit smoking. He was getting in shape. He was happy — that’s all I know. I was literally texting with him that morning, funny Matty. He was not in pain. He wasn’t struggling. (And) he was happy.”

Perry, who died on Oct. 28 at 54 years old, had dealt with addiction issues for many years. He apparently drowned while in his hot tub at his Los Angeles home. Aniston hopes people will take her words to heart about her longtime friend.

Jennifer Aniston Says That Matthew Perry Was’ Really Healthy’

“I want people to know he was really healthy, and getting healthy,” Aniston said. “He was on a pursuit. He worked so hard. (And) he really was dealt a tough one. I miss him dearly. We all do. Boy, he made us laugh really hard.”

Witherspoon costars with Aniston in The Morning After. From her standpoint, the fact that Matthew Perry was happy at the time of his death is worth noting.

“It’s incredible what was born of those friendships, and how you guys have always taken care of each other for years and years,” Witherspoon said. “It’s really beautiful and set standards for our business, as well, with the way you respected each other. I feel lucky that I got to be on that show and I walked in like Alice in Wonderland, watching the most popular cast do this whole thing.

“I remember going home and going, oh, they’re in another league,” she said. “They’re on another planet on comedy levels that I’ve never seen my entire life, pivoting on a dime and working on each other’s energy and it was extraordinary.”

Aniston, Reese Witherspoon Are Longtime Friends

Aniston and Witherspoon have been friends for nearly 20 years. They have a built-in connection that goes back a few years. But the actresses are quite serious about their work. In the midst of the interview, Aniston and Witherspoon shared their thoughts about the connective tissue that ties them together.

“It’s just in our DNA that we are collaborators,” Aniston said. “We’re partners. We’re friends. (And) we’re girlfriends, we share all sorts of heartbreaks in life and love and everything.”

“There’s a comfort to that,” Witherspoon said. “It’s just mutual respect and years of experience. And I think we’re both incredulous that we’re both still kicking around! That we’re still working at this level is such a privilege.”

The Morning Show can be seen on Apple+ TV. Also starring in the show are Jon Hamm, Billy Crudup, Julianna Margulies, Steve Carell, and Marcia Gay Harden.
