Jamie Foxx Makes Emotional First Public Appearance Since Health Scare: ‘I Saw the Tunnel’

Jamie Foxx is celebrating life after suffering a major health scare earlier this year.

While accepting the Vanguard Award at the Critics Choice Association Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black, Latino, and AAPI Achievements event in Los Angeles on Monday (Dec 4), the actor opened up about the past year and his life-threatening medical emergency.

“I want to thank everybody. I’ve been through something, I’ve been through some things,” Foxx began. “It’s crazy, I couldn’t [walk on stage] six months ago. I couldn’t actually walk.”

Becoming visibly emotional, Jamie Foxx was encouraged to continue his difficult story by the audience. “It feels good to be here,” he continued. “I cherish every single minute now. It’s different, you know? It’s different, it’s beyond — I wouldn’t wish what went through on my worst enemy because it’s tough when you almost… When it’s almost over, when you see the tunnel.”

“I saw the tunnel, I didn’t see the light!” he joked. “It was hot in that tunnel! I didn’t know what I was doing. S—, am I going to the right place? I see the devil going, ‘C’mon.’”

Jamie Foxx Thanks Sister, Daughter for Keeping His Health Status Private

Jamie Foxx went on to thank all of his colleagues for the prayers they’ve sent his way since his hospitalization, admitting that he was “trying not to make eye contact with people because I’m just going to explode up here.”

His sister and daughter received his heartfelt thanks as well, as they kept the nature of his health scare private, per his request.

“I have a new respect for life, I have a new respect for my art,” Foxx said. “I watched so many movies and listened to so many songs trying to have the time go by. Don’t give up on your art, man. … I want to say six months ago I couldn’t fathom that this could happen or that I would be here, but as I walk up here to this microphone and get this Vanguard Award, all I can say is ‘Lord, have mercy, Jesus.’”

The initial news of Jamie Foxx’s ill health broke in April. Shortly thereafter, Foxx’s daughter, Corinne, assuaged fans’ fears with a statement. “Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery,” she shared.

It took months, but Jamie Foxx eventually gave his own update in August, informing fans that he was almost back to his old self. “It’s been an unexpected dark journey … but I can see the light,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “I’m thankful to everyone that reached out and sent well wishes and prayers … I have a lot of people to thank … u just don’t know how much it meant … I will be thanking all of you personally … and if you didn’t know … GOD IS GOOD … all day every day.”
