‘Friends’: Tom Selleck Raves About ‘Talented’ Co-Star Matthew Perry

‘Friends’: Tom Selleck Raves About ‘Talented’ Co-Star Matthew Perry

In his time on Friends, Tom Selleck had the chance to see Matthew Perry work and deliver his lines with ease and professionalism. In a recent interview with USA Today, Selleck opened up about Perry, who died in October 2023, and how the Friends star helped him while guest-starring on the show.

During one episode of Friends, Tom Selleck puts his spin on Chandler, Matthew Perry’s character. Perry and Matt LeBlanc, who plays Joey Tribbiani, do their best to act like Selleck’s character, Dr. Richard Burke. As the Magnum PI star quickly learned, however, pulling off Chandler Bing is harder than it looks.

“We had this role reversal thing going,” Selleck said. “Matthew had this speech pattern that I hadn’t been aware of.” Tom Selleck is referencing Perry’s delivery of his lines that earned his character such fame.

“Matt told me: ‘It’s a joke, Tom. It’s the way he says it,’ But during that whole show, I kept going up to him asking, ‘Can you say it again?’ and he’d do the line,” Selleck said. “That was his signature.”

Tom Selleck also recalled how Matthew Perry handled his daily routine on the set of Friends. According to Selleck, Perry “walked onto the set, and that brought the house down.”

“He was raw talent,” Selleck continued. “Matthew’s gone, so it’s easy to say this, but it’s true. I think he was the most talented of a very talented group of people.”

Tom Selleck is wrapping up his time on Blue Bloods on CBS. He’s played New York City Police Commissioner Frank Reagan for 14 seasons. The venerable Friday night show will end this season.

Matthew Perry’s Father Becomes Close With Tom Selleck

Tom Selleck was also a friend of Matthew Perry’s father, John Bennett Perry. As the interview goes on, Tom Selleck talks about seeing Matthew Perry on the Friends set.

“Everybody couldn’t have been nicer to me,” Selleck said. “But every day I’d see Matthew, and I’d ask him, ‘How’s your father?’ And he’d always smile and we’d catch up. I got to know his father when I was a young struggling actor. Almost any commercial or pilot I went out on, there was John. We became real good friends.”

Perry received one Primetime Emmy nomination for his work in 2002. His other Emmy nominations came from playing Joe Quincy in The West Wing, playing Ron Clark in The Ron Clark Story, and as part of Friends: The Reunion in 2021.

In this year’s Emmy broadcast, Matthew Perry was honored for his work on Friends. He also took his substance abuse problems seriously, finally getting sober before he died. After his death, his family created The Matthew Perry Foundation, which aims to help people struggling with addiction get the help they need.
