Hollywood marriages get a rap of being rather short-lived, but Ed Harris and Amy Madigan don’t fit the celebrity mold. Harris and Madigan have now been married for 40 years. While each of them has had stellar careers individually, they’ve also found time to work together.
The couple tied the knot back in 1983 while both were working on a movie titled Places in the Sun. For his part, Ed Harris noted the ease he felt with Amy Madigan in their scenes together.
“The acting thing is so intimate and personal,” Harris said in a 1985 interview with the Chicago Tribune. “If we’re not working together… you can’t really talk about your day very well. When you’re working together, though, there’s so much that is shared, so much unspoken thought and emotion that goes into the work, that it really draws you closer.”
Ed Harris, Amy Madigan Receive Notoriety
Ed Harris has been nominated for four Academy Awards in Apollo 13, The Truman Show, Pollock, and The Hours. Meanwhile, he also got some attention for playing Julia Roberts’ husband in Stepmom and picked up an Emmy nomination for his work in Westworld.
As for Amy Madigan, the public became aware of her when she was playing Annie Kinsella in the 1989 movie Field of Dreams. She also caught moviegoers’ attention in her 1989 role opposite John Candy in Uncle Buck. Madigan starred in the HBO series Carnivale and received an Emmy nomination for her work in Roe vs. Wade, which came out in 1989.
Ed Harris and Amy Madigan have one child, a daughter named Lily Dolores Harris, born in 1993.
Amy Madigan Opens Up About Her Marriage
Amy Madigan has been open about playing romantic roles opposite her husband, Ed Harris. She said that their real-life romance lets them show that “the closeness of being married gives us the ability and the freedom to do those kinds of things. I mean, with another actor you’d have to spend a lot of time and energy getting to know them first.”
Amy Madigan also debunked one of the more interesting stories. For a long time, people thought that the couple married right after a brief affair. Madigan said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune, however, that she and Harris knew one another two years before their first movie. “It’s a nice Hollywood story, but it’s not true,” she explained.
Both Amy Madigan and Ed Harris enjoy working as actors to this day. Hopefully, they can find other projects where they can work together. One of their most recent ones was Buried Child back in 2016. “When [Buried Child] came up, I just remember Scott Elliott calling almost two years ago and saying, ‘I love this play; would you guys like to do it?’” Madigan said. “That was an easy one. It’s how you sometimes hope things will turn out.”
These projects bring Ed Harris and Amy Madigan closer together. Hopefully, they will get more opportunities like this one in the future.
