‘Cheers’: Where is the Cast Now?

Cheers ran for 11 successful seasons on NBC, making stars and household names of many people. Where, though, is the cast now? They have been busy with their own lives and careers. Sadly, a couple of them are no longer alive.

Ted Danson, who played Sam Malone, offered up a little reflection on those days. “Everything I do is because of the popularity of that show,” Danson told Entertainment Tonight back in 2022. “It still makes me laugh when I watch sometimes. It’s funny and it’s great to see my friends and they make me laugh.”

Let’s start our look at where the Cheers cast is now by checking out Danson. After a few years away from sitcoms, Ted Danson returned for Becker between 1998-2004. He followed that up by appearing in Damages and two more sitcoms, The Good Place and Mr. Mayor. Danson has been married to actress Mary Steenburgen since 1995 and has two daughters with his first wife, Casey Coates.

Shelley Long played Diane Chambers on there, but she left in 1987. Long starred in a few movies, like Troop Beverly Hills, The Brady Bunch Movie, and Dr. T & the Women. Long had a recurring role on Modern Family between 2009 and 2018. She returned for the series finale of Cheers and a few episodes of Frasier. Long has children from her marriage to Bruce Tyson.

‘Cheers’ Cast Today Stays Busy

Rhea Perlman, who played Carla Tortelli, took a few turns in the movie world. She appeared in Matilda (1996), The Sessions (2012), and Poms (2019). Perlman also had a recurring role as part of The Mindy Project between 2014-2017. She has three children from her marriage to Danny Devito. They separated in 2017.

George Wendt, who got a big pop when walking into the Cheers bar, has done a few movies post-TV series. They include Gung Ho, Forever Young, and Lakeboat. Wendt also makes occasional appearances on Saturday Night Live as a big Chicago Bears fan. He has three children with his wife, Bernadette Burkett, according to Us Magazine.

Kelsey Grammer not only appeared on Cheers as Dr. Frasier Crane, but he also had his own spinoff series, too. Grammer won four Emmy Awards for his work. Movie roles include X-Men: The Last Stand, Swing Vote, and Transformers: Age of Extinction. Grammer, who went to Juilliard, has seven children between four women.

Woody Harrelson Joined Cast In 1985

Woody Harrelson came on the show in 1985. He took the place of Nicolas Colasanto, who had died. Harrelson appeared in movies like The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), The Messenger (2009), and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (2017). He also picked up an Emmy Award nomination for True Detective (2014). Harrelson has three children from his marriage to Laura Louie.

John Ratzenberger, who played mailman Cliff Clavin, has done a lot of voiceover work for Pixar. Among his films are Monsters, Inc., (2001), The Incredibles (2004), and Mack in Cars (2006). Ratzenberger shares his two kids with his ex-wife, Georgia Stiny.

Bebe Neuwirth has stayed busy after playing Lilith Crane on both Cheers and Frasier. Other work includes Jumanji and Jumanji: The Next Level. Neuwirth’s additional TV work includes appearing in Madam Secretary. Neuwirth has been married since 2009 to Chris Calkins.

Finally, Kirstie Alley played Rebecca Howe on Cheers. She died in 2023 after a battle with cancer.
