Charlize Theron’s Kids: Everything to Know About Jackson and August

Charlize Theron has a strong desire to raise two strong kids in Jackson and August… and she’s doing her best right now.

Theron knows that there are challenges in being a single mom. Yet she’s also aware of where she came from in South Africa. What Theron hopes to do is instill beliefs in her two daughters that they have meaning and purpose in being fully alive.

Theron has been quite open and upfront about her desire to adopt children. In fact, she talked about this a little bit more in-depth when chatting with People back in 2018. “Even when I was in relationships, I was always honest with my partners, that adoption was how my family would look one day,” Theron said. “This was definitely not a second option for me. It was always my first.”

So, Theron adopted August in 2012. She followed that up by adopting August in 2015. She does not share many photos of the girls on social media. A recent exception, though, occurred in 2022 as a photo showed Theron and Jackson lying next to their dog.

Charlize Theron Wants Kids To Be Strong

Theron grew up in South Africa during the apartheid era, one bereft of any sort of equal rights at all. She remembers those times and wants Jackson and August to be strong women in the world.

“I want them to know who they are, and I want them to be so f—ing proud of who they are,” Theron told Elle in an interview. “Building confidence for them right now is an oath I made to myself when I brought them home. They need to know where they come from and be proud of that. But they’re going to have to know that it’s a different climate for them than it is for me, and how unfair that is. If I can do something about that, of course, I’m going to.”

Jackson Theron was adopted in 2012. It happened just before Charlize started filming Max Max: Fury Road. She talked about her adoption process back in 2019 while being interviewed by National Public Radio. Theron said that it was important for her to “cast a wide net” when seeking out a child.

“I wanted to believe that somehow my child would find me in the way that we were just meant to be,” Theron said in the interview. “So I wasn’t specific with anything … In whatever country they would allow me as a single woman to adopt, that’s where I filed. And it just happened to be that both my children ended up being American. They were born in the United States and they both happened to be African American.”

Jackson, August Theron Grow Up Quickly

August Theron was adopted in 2015 and is somewhat close to her older sister. As they have gotten older, though, their personalities have started to appear more and more. While this is happening, Jackson and August have become aware of social issues in the United States. Theron said that her daughters know about the Black Lives Matter movement, including being involved with protests.

“They were so wanting to be proactive in, ‘Mom, what do we do? How do we change this?’” Theron said in a 2020 interview with People. “And just their willingness to make signs and to want to go protest, and they still have their signs in the car. And when they see protesters on the side of the road, they’ll say, ‘Mom, honk. Honk, Mom, honk.’ There’s a real sense of pride.”

At this time, Theron remains single. That doesn’t mean she has not heard it from her kids, who believe their mom could use a boyfriend. But Theron is quite happy being her own best company. She has her hands full with a film career, a modeling career (see her Dior ads), and being a full-time parent to two kids. Theron does love her daughters and is proud of their accomplishments. She just wants to provide them with a good home, security, safety, and a place where they can feel loved.
