Fans of The Princess Bride were probably overjoyed when seeing Cary Elwes wish Wallace Shawn a very happy birthday. Well, it’s not just another birthday. Shawn celebrated turning 80 years old. For his part, Elwes took to X and shared a clip from their scene in the movie.
In case you’ve forgotten, Elwes played Westley, who is out on his horse and looking for his beloved. Wallace Shawn plays Vizzini, a villain sort of character who keeps trying to get Wesley to drink poison. That did not work out too well.
This scene falls under the word “iconic” for those who have watched this over and over again.
Wallace Shawn Stays Busy With TV, Movie Work
If you think Wallace Shawn is slowing down, then think again. He is busy playing Dr. John Sturgis on Young Sheldon. Other recent TV work includes Gossip Girl, Evil, and Search Party. Shawn also has done voices for The Simpsons as well as the animated sequel The Addams Family 2. Look for him to return and play the voice of Rex from the Toy Story franchise, a role he’s been voicing since the original film in 1995. Word has gotten out that Toy Story 5 is in the studio once again.
Back in 2019, Shawn did an interview about movies and it included The Princess Bride. “I meet people on the street who are fans of The Princess Bride more than anything else,” Shawn said. On his memories of filming the movie, Shawn said, “Well, we shot it in a very beautiful landscape, in northern England. When we were shooting at the London studio, I stayed at a glorious hotel and had a very agreeable drive to the studio every morning. That was all very pleasant.”
In an interview with Vulture, Shawn talked about meeting people in the street and having them say lines to him. “Yes, there’s … a certain amount of that,” he said. “I have a lot of different lives going on at the same time. So I may be walking down the street, thinking very angry political thoughts, and people stop me and say lines of mine from a movie I made 30 years ago! And, you know, I’m briefly startled and look at them as if they’re insane. But that’s my life. That’s my destiny, it seems.”
Rob Reiner directed The Princess Bride based on the novel by William Goldman. It’s a story about a man who rescues his true love from a dastardly prince. Other cast members besides Elwes and Shawn include Mandy Patinkin, Christopher Guest, Chris Sarandon, Peter Falk, Robin Wright, Fred Savage, and Andre the Giant.
