Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt Look Back on ‘Devil Wears Prada’ 17 Years Later

Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt proved that they could work with some heavy hitters as far as actors go in The Devil Wears Prada. Recently, both actresses sat down and talked about the movie and their other work going on. Blunt played lead assistant Emily while Hathaway was junior assistant Andrea in the movie.

What is the movie about? “A smart but sensible new graduate lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the demanding editor-in-chief of a high fashion magazine,” according to IMDb. It remains one of the most popular movies done by both actresses.

In a one-on-one interview with each other for Variety, Hathaway and Blunt talk about how each one got to their parts in the movie. “I joined the cast of The Devil Wears Prada just before you and thought, ‘Who’s going to play Emily?’” Hathaway said. Blunt replied, “They said, ‘Some rando who no one’s ever heard of.’”

Hathaway says that Blunt’s character was not cast as of yet at that time. “I was hearing that your name came up, and they said, ‘It’s this amazing girl out of England and she’s so funny.’ And I remember walking into the room and turning and meeting you.” Hathaway also said that she had an instant thought, “What a movie star!”

Anne Hathaway Says Emily Blunt Was ‘Shedding Stardust’ At First Meeting

Blunt said, “What? Are you getting this?” Hathaway then follows up and says, “You were shedding stardust. Then we went for coffee. I took you for a walk around where I live.” Then Blunt replied, “I was so green coming into that situation. And you were like the warmest embrace. Even though you were a colossal movie star at that time, you treated me like a complete equal. You are one of the people I’ve known the longest. We’ve known each other for 18 years.”

The Devil Wears Prada would collect $325 million internationally at the box office. Blunt said that they had a “joy bomb of a time” making the movie. She added that the movie is quoted to her at least once per week. Blunt said it “will be the movie that changed my life.”

After sharing some words about their current projects, Hathaway and Blunt spend some time trading quotes from The Devil Wears Prada with each other. Blunt said, “‘Is there some reason that my coffee isn’t here? Has she died or something?’ I remember that one. I think (Streep) improvised that one.”

Hathaway added these thoughts on the subject. She said, “I remember seeing Meryl come up with 18 different lines on the spot. Stanley Tucci was doing the same, and you. I was just like this kindergartner who was like, ‘How are they all so good?’”

Blunt picks up an index card next to her and reads the line. “OK, this is one of my favorites. ‘Oh, I’m sorry. Do you have some prior commitments? Some hideous skirt convention you have to go to?’” And Blunt breaks out into laughter. Hathaway follows up by saying, “I love that you crack yourself up 18 years later, because that’s what happened on the day.”
