People Are Mad About the 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Here’s Why

NBC’s coverage of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is underway—and viewers aren’t having it.

The New York City tradition officially kicked off at 8:30 am when the legendary balloon giants, marching bands, performers, and more started making their way down the 2.5-mile route that stretches from the Upper West Side to Midtown.

Thousands of people are currently lining the streets watching the event in person, and millions more are tuning into NBC to watch the Today anchors cover the show. While the city-goers are having the time of their lives, those watching from home are disgruntled, saying this is the “worst coverage of the parade ever.”

People have taken to social media to express their anger over the way Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie, and Hoda Kotb are presenting the parade. Most people simply want to watch the parade flow through the streets, but all they’re watching are ads and interviews.

Viewers Accuse NBC of Glossing Over the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade

The Today Show has been posting pictures and videos of the event on X throughout the morning, and viewers have been commenting on said posts with their major gripes.

“All we are seeing are interviews and shows,” one person wrote. “No bands or floats. Have been watching this parade since I was a little girl, and at 65, this has to be the [worst] ‘parade.’”

“What did NBC do to the Thanksgiving Parade?” another viewer asked. “You ruined it !!! This parade is terrible, too many commercials, and commentators. Please restore the parade the way it used to be!!”

Another person accused NBC of using the 99-year-old event as a way of pushing “shameless” network promos onto the viewers. Several people have said they haven’t seen a single balloon or band perform so far. Others gave up and changed the channel.

“I started watching at 8:30 Central. Watched for about 15 minutes and had to turn the channel to watch something else,” wrote a commenter. “Something not so boring. In the old days, when I was a kid, the parade was good. Mostly balloons, floats, and a few marching bands. And Santa. But it has become…”

While NBC is getting slammed with hundreds of critical comments, a few people have voiced that there is an alternative way to watch the parade. CBS affiliates are apparently highlighting the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade as well, and they’re putting all the focus on the actual event.
