Authorities revealed new details regarding the rescue efforts of Friends star Matthew Perry, who was found dead at his Los Angeles area home on Saturday, October 28. He was 54.

Around 4 p.m. on Saturday, authorities received a call from Matthew Perry’s home. The caller’s identity remains unknown, but they reported the actor was in a hot tub and unresponsive. At 4:07 p.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived on the scene, with the LAPD arriving a few minutes later.

“An adult male patient was deceased prior to first response arrival,” the LAFD reported in a statement. “The patient was found by a bystander who had re-positioned the victim where the head was out of water” in a freestanding hot tub. “Firefighters pulled the victim out of the jacuzzi and did a quick medical assessment to find he was deceased.”

Matthew Perry’s cause of death remains unknown. According to LAPD Capt. Scot Williams, who leads the Robbery Homicide Division investigating Perry’s death, the “cause of death may not be known for some time.” He clarified that “foul play is not suspected.”

Officials reported “no obvious signs of trauma.” The official cause of death, however, is “pending the coroner’s investigation.” Experts advised that it could take weeks or even months to complete the toxicology screening and investigation.

Matthew Perry Once Shared How He Wants to Be Remembered

Like all of us, Matthew Perry was a fan of Friends. In a 2022 Q with Tom Power interview, however, the actor admitted that Chandler Bing was only a small portion of what he hoped would be his legacy.

“The best thing about me, bar none, is if somebody comes up to me and says, ‘I can’t stop drinking, can you help me?’ I can say yes and follow up and do it,” Perry said. “It’s the best thing.”

“And I’ve said this for a long time,” he continued. “When I die, I don’t want Friends to be the first thing that’s mentioned. I want that to be the first thing that’s mentioned, and I’m going to live the rest of my life proving that.”

In the wake of Matthew Perry’s passing, tributes poured in from every corner of the globe. Fans and colleagues alike remembered the Friends star for his talent, wit, and kindness. Perry’s fellow Friends stars, understandably, have yet to speak out on his death. They did, however, release a joint statement.

“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just cast mates, we are a family,” the statement reads. “There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss.”
