Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade 2023 kicked off the holiday season yesterday, leaving many viewers wondering: which float is tallest? The parade this year showcased 28 floats, each composed of a myriad of unique set pieces and structural elements. What truly mesmerized the spectators was the exquisite craftsmanship. Over half a mile of meticulously hand-sewn skirt and fringe adorned each float in the parade.
However, the tallest float should not come as a big surprise. It makes since that the belle of the ball, Saint Nick himself, would boast the tallest float. Santa’s Sleigh, the largest float in the parade, towers at a staggering height of 3.5 stories and stretches an impressive length of 60 feet.
Santa’s Sleigh Has Been a Fixture in the Parade Since the Beginning
For decades, the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has culminated with the spectacular appearance of Santa’s Sleigh float. This beloved float showcases Santa Claus himself, gracefully riding on his signature sleigh. Adding to the grandeur, the Parade commences with the charismatic Tom Turkey, leading the way down the bustling route year after year. White confetti and vibrant “Believe” Stars have traditionally accompanied this classic float. Santa’s Sleigh holds the record for being the sole float that has graced all 96 Parades and counting. Notably, this iconic float has undergone an impressive 25 design changes as of 2023.
Santa’s Sleigh was an original float created for the inaugural Macy’s Christmas Parade in 1924. Like the other floats of that time, its design was simple yet charming. Santa sat atop a snowy mountain in his sleigh, with discreetly placed evergreen trees adorning the float. Notably, this float was among the few that were horse-drawn, a tradition that gradually faded away during the 1930s and 1940s.
New Floats Joined Santa’s Sleigh at Macy’s Day Thanksgiving Parade 2023
However, it’s also tradition to have new floats alongside tried and true themes. The 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade showcased three new floats: Beagle Scout Snoopy, Blue Cat & Chugs, and Monkey D. Luffy.
Snoopy has become a familiar face at the holiday event, and this year will be extra special as it marks the 9th iteration of the longest-running character balloon in the parade! According to People, it commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Beagle Scouts’ first appearance in Charles M. Schulz’s cherished comic strip.
Meanwhile, the new float Monkey D. Luffy had a fashion emergency. A video shows the popular manga character’s balloon colliding with a tree, causing its straw hat to tear. By the time it reached 34th Street, the hat’s brim looked limp and floppy.
