Halloween’s 10 Most Popular Candies, Ranked

Halloween is just around the corner, with folks stocking up on candy to give to little ghosts and goblins out trick-or-treating. The online delivery service, Instacart, is keeping tabs on sweets households are buying during spooky season, CBS reports. They compiled data about candy purchases in each state and came up with the ultimate list of popular Halloween candy.

Instacart now allows shoppers to enter their ZIP code and find out the Halloween enthusiasm level in their area with the “Scare Score”. This score is calculated by analyzing candy, costume, and decoration purchases in each ZIP code. Based on the company’s calculations, the town of Lehi, Utah, emerges as the epoch of Halloween mojo. Meanwhile, Dallas, Texas secures second place, closely followed by Houston in third. Shoppers residing in these areas have demonstrated a penchant for purchasing Halloween paraphernalia on Instacart, surpassing their counterparts in other regions.

When it comes to candy, three chocolates are the kings of Halloween. According to Instacart, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, peanut M&M’s, and regular M&M’s consistently rank among the top three most popular candies each year. The top sellers were ranked by the total weight sold. At number one was Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, and two were Peanut M&M’s. Coming in at third was Regular M&M’s. Ranking fourth were Tootsie Pops, with Twizzlers rounding out the top five.

The Remaining Top 10 Halloween Candies for 2023

The rest of the top ten Halloween candies according to Instacart are full of familiar favorites. Number six is Hershey’s Milk Chocolate, while seven is the newer Sour Patch Kids. Coming in at number eight is the seasonal stable Candy Corn. Rounding out the top ten is Kit Kat and Starbursts.

Instacart’s Trends Expert Laurentia Romaniuk weighed in on the findings. “Comparing this list of the top 10 Halloween candies to last year reveals some exciting changes,” Romaniuk said. “We’ve got three newcomers: Tootsie Pops, Sour Patch Kids, and Candy Corn — two classics and a candy with a modern sour twist, which tells us there’s a delectable blend of nostalgia and contemporary flavors showing up in candy bowls.”

However, the tastebuds of little goblins seem to change from state to state. Instacart analyzed candy purchases in different locations and found that Utah, along with most of the Western U.S., preferred peanut M&Ms. In contrast, Texas stood out with above-average purchases of Ferrero Rocher Hazelnut Chocolates. This data reveals regional candy preferences across the country.

In California, Red Vines were preferred, while Twizzlers topped the list in states like Illinois and New York. Floridians favored DumDum lollypops, and Georgia showed a preference for Trolli Gummi Candy. Interestingly, Snickers, although not in the Top 10, was the preferred choice among shoppers in Washington, D.C. In the analysis of candy purchases per customer, Utah leads, followed by Montana, Alaska, Idaho, and Wyoming. Conversely, the states with the lowest candy purchases are Hawaii, Washington, D.C., Maine, Florida, and Alabama, according to Instacart.
