Fruit Stripe Gum Discontinued After More Than 50 Years

People have been chewing Fruit Stripe Gum since 1969, but the company that makes it will stop producing the flavorful sticks. Ferrara Candy Company did confirm that it will discontinue making it. This news will disappoint those who have enjoyed its flavors for a long, long time.

“We have made the difficult decision to sunset Fruit Stripe Gum, but consumers may still be able to find the product at select retailers nationwide,” a company spokesman told Today in an email. “The decision to sunset this product was not taken lightly, and we considered many factors before coming to this decision, including consumer preferences, and purchasing patterns — and overall brand trends for Fruit Stripe Gum.”

The gum was quite creative with its use of Yipes the Zebra. Each stick of Fruit Stripe Gum provided users with a temporary tattoo of Yipes the Zebra. Flavors like Wet n’ Wild Melon, Cherry, Lemon, Orange, and Peach Smash were in different gum packs.

Fruit Stripe Gum’s origin story goes back to James Parker, who invented it. The Beech-Nut company had the colorful gum in its portfolio of candies. Well, the gum was transferred to other companies before landing with Ferrara.

Social media was alive and well with people expressing their feelings about all of this.

Fruit Stripe Fans Air Their Voices On X

One person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “So long Yipes! A little slice of our childhood has just died with the news that Ferrara Candy Company has discontinued Fruit Stripe gum. That fruity aroma and the burst of those juicy fruit flavors…that lasted :10.” Another person wrote, “All things considered Fruit Stripe Gum stayed in business way longer than the product would have you expect.”

This person had a flashback regarding Fruit Stripe. “I just found out that another piece of my childhood is dying. Fruit Stripe gum is being discontinued,” this person wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “This stuff was like currency back in elementary school. The flavor would only last for about 30 seconds, but that 30 seconds was enough to keep you coming back for more.”

And this person on X wrote, “End of Eras Tour Nick Saban Bill Belichick Tiger and Nike Fruit Stripe Gum.” Yes, it’s been a time to see legacies in different areas come to an end. One more as this person added some humor into their post.

Person Posts Memory of What Gum Means

“RIP to Fruit Stripe gum,” the person wrote. “The only time I have ever had a tattoo is from a pack … usually bought on a dusty shelf at the dollar store. A bolt of lightning lasted longer than the flavor… but you bought a pack because you felt bad for the zebra.”

And here’s a person feeling the love for the gum. “rip fruit stripe gum. nothing about you lasted long (flavor, elasticity, tattoo) except my love for you anyway,” the person wrote.

Ferrara is letting the public know that it will be “delighted” to offer other brands. They include Fun Dip, Gobstopper, Jujyfruits, Atomic Fireballs, Chuckles, Pixy Stix, and others.

There is no replacement scheduled to be made for Fruit Punch Gum. It will just ride into the sunset as a good memory for those who used to chew the gum. Once it stops being produced, those who love Fruit Stripe will have to search for a pack. They will be out there, but not easily available to the public.
