‘Twisters’ Trailer Released During Super Bowl LVIII, Takes Viewers by Surprise

Although it is not the key center of tonight’s Super Bowl LVIII, the trailer for Twisters made its debut, and viewers were caught by surprise.

According to IMDb, Twisters is an “update” to the 1996 film Twister. The original film centered on a pair of storm chases who risk their lives in an attempt to test an experimental weather alert system. The new film stars Glen Powell, Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet, and Maura Tierney.

ScreenRant previously reported that the original film’s star Helen Hunt is not set to reprise her role as Jo in the new film. Her opposite, Bill Paxton, passed away in Feb. 2017.

Hunt previously stated that she attempted to get a Twister sequel pitched for years. “I tried to get it made with Daveed [Diggs] and Rafael [Casal] and me writing it,” she said during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live. “And all Black and Brown storm chasers, and they wouldn’t do it. I was going to direct it… We could barely get a meeting, and this is in June of 2020 when it was all about diversity. It would have been so cool.”

Twisters is set to make its theatrical debut on July 19, 2024.

Glen Powell Declares ‘Twisters’ Is ‘Not a Reboot’

During a recent interview with Vogue, Glen Powell spoke about Twisters and how it is not a reboot.

“It’s definitely not a reboot,” Powell clarified. “We’re not trying to recreate the story from the first one. It’s a completely original story.”

Powell then said there are no characters from the original movie back as well. “So it’s not really a continuation,” he continued. “It’s just its own standalone story in the modern day.”

Also speaking about the original film, the Twisters star said he doesn’t think anyone has brought up that movie in forever. “But talking to people, they’re like ‘That was one of my favorite movies growing up. That movie terrified me.’”

Powell then reflected on the “general theme” of Twisters that will appeal to the fans of the original film. “When I was working on Top Gun, [Tom] Cruise brought up a really interesting thing, where he’s like, ‘If you want to make movies of a certain size and scope and scale, you have to figure out what can connect with everyone around the world in every territory.’”

He went on to add that weather seems to be a topic that captures audiences as well. “And humans-versus-weather is a very universal idea, how powerless we really are in the face of these cataclysmic forces.”
