‘Tron: Ares’: Jared Leto Shares First Image From Upcoming Sequel

Disney and Jared Leto are teaming up to hack the grid and unveil the first peek at the upcoming Tron sequel, Tron: Ares. The Morbius star recently posted on Instagram to tease the belated sequel. He shared an image showcasing a character from the movie in a sleek black suit illuminated by red lights.

“ARE YOU READY??” the actor and sometimes rock star wrote, revealing that “Tron: Ares” comes out next year. “See you on the grid,” Leto added.

Tron: Ares, helmed by Joachim Rønning, commenced filming in Vancouver in January. This upcoming movie marks the third chapter in the sci-fi movie series. It succeeds the original 1982 film and its 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy.

Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Gillian Anderson join Jared Leto in the cast of Tron: Ares.

Jared Leto’s ‘Tron: Ares’ Marks a Departure for the Series

Tron: Ares will depict a sophisticated Program transitioning from the digital realm to the real world for a perilous mission. Of course, Ares entering the human realm marks a groundbreaking event. This is the first time a Program interacts with individuals outside a machine’s software. This propels the Tron franchise into new territories.

Disney has entrusted Joachim Rønning with directing the next chapter in the Tron series. Rønning brings a wealth of experience to the franchise. He’s known for his work on titles like Maleficent: Mistress of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. More than a decade after Tron: Legacy grossed approximately $400 million worldwide, Rønning’s aptitude positions him perfectly to carry on the legacy.

In 1982, Steven Lisberger wrote and directed the original Tron. It unveiled a realm where artificial intelligence advanced to the extent of transporting Kevin Flynn (played by Jeff Bridges) from the physical world to a digital one. Upon discovering the sentient Programs inhabiting this digital reality, Flynn allies with some of them to find a way out. Eventually, he ascended to the position of CEO at ENCOM.

Years later, in the storyline of Tron: Legacy, Sam Flynn (portrayed by Garrett Hedlund) gets pulled into the Grid while searching for his father. There, he confronts an antagonistic Program named Clu (also played by Bridges). The connection between the events of Tron: Ares and the preceding sequel is yet to be revealed.

The Jared Leto-led Tron: Ares is slated for a 2025 theatrical release. Meanwhile, the first two movies are currently available for streaming on Disney+.
