’Titanic’s Kate Winslet Reflects on ‘Amazing’ Bond With Leonardo DiCaprio 26 Years Later

Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio forged an “amazing” bond while filming James Cameron’s epic Titanic, and they remain just as close 26 years after the premiere.

Winslet reflected on her immediate connection with DiCaprio while speaking in an exclusive interview with ET . Before meeting each other, the stars knew their chemistry needed to be on point. The film had a massive budget of $100 million—that ultimately grew to $295 million—and plenty of hype. So the leads had to stick their landings to ensure the investment was worthy. Fortunately, the duo had no trouble becoming friends.

“Once I started working with Leo, we were able to kind of find our own rhythm,” Winslet remembered. “And it’s amazing to kind of look back and think about it all over again.”

Kate Winslet was drawn to Leonardo DiCaprio’s energy and uniqueness. She recalled how the What’s Eating Gilbert Grape star was a carefree soul who was genuine and comfortable with himself, which made her feel at ease as she got to know him.

“He was this kind of mess of long, skinny, uncoordinated limbs. And he was just very free with himself. And he had this effervescent energy that was really magnetic,” she continued. “And I remember thinking, ‘Oh, this is gonna be fun. We’re definitely gonna get along.’ And we just really did. We just really did.”

Winslet also praised her co-star for his work ethic and curiosity. Calling him a “very, very smart, very, very curious” man, she explained how “fascinated” he was with the events surrounding the Titanic’s demise and with the stories of the passengers, especially on the lower decks.

“We connected on so many levels,” she added. “That sense of focus on the craft and still really caring deeply about that to this day.”

After filming wrapped up, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet remained friends. They also went on to co-star together in Revolutionary Road over a decade later. To this day, they are constantly connecting and prioritizing their relationship.

“We’ll always just make that call right away. There’s no like, ‘Hang on, I’ll call you tomorrow.’ It’s instant. And that’s actually really something,” she noted. “You know, if you think about it, in the world that we live in now, to have friendships that bind you. And that shared history, it’s really something.”
