Batman director Tim Burton is set to helm a remake of the sci-fi B-movie classic Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. As per reports from Deadline, Burton will be in charge of a film reimagining, with a screenplay penned by Gillian Flynn, the author of Gone Girl.
The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman remake’s resemblance to the original in terms of characters and plot details remains a mystery. Nevertheless, with a title like that, it’s safe to assume the basic premise will tower above all else.
Directed by Nathan Hertz and penned by Mark Hanna, the colossal classic made its debut in 1958. The plot revolves around an heiress (played by Allison Hayes) who, thanks to her close encounter, grows to an astounding height of 50 feet. This causes towering troubles in her marriage.
‘Attack of the 50 Foot Woman’ Was Remade Before Tim Burton Set His Eyes on It
The movie underwent a previous remake in 1993. Director Christopher Guest and writer Joseph Dougherty gave their spin on Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. This version featured Daryl Hannah in the lead role and went straight to HBO. The cast also included Daniel Baldwin, Frances Fisher, Xander Berkeley, and Paul Benedict.
Of course, Tim Burton is no stranger to 50s camp sci-fi like Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. In his 1996 comedy Mars Attacks!, he delved into the 1950s sci-fi era with a stellar cast including Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Michael J. Fox.
Burton also has experience with remakes. He has a track record of directing reboot films such as Planet of the Apes, Dark Shadows, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Additionally, he has directed multiple episodes of Netflix’s Wednesday, a reboot of The Addams Family.
Tim Burton’s highly anticipated sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is scheduled to hit theaters on September 6th. This follow-up to the beloved 1988 cult classic Beetlejuice reunites stars Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. Joining the cast are Jenna Ortega from Wednesday, Willem Dafoe, and the director’s current flame, Monica Bellucci.
Meanwhile, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman screenwriter Gillian Flynn won the Critics’ Choice Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Gone Girl. She also co-wrote the intense heist thriller Widows with director Steve McQueen, released in 2018. Flynn’s novel Sharp Objects was adapted into an HBO miniseries, where she also contributed as a writer. Additionally, Flynn served as showrunner and writer for the Prime Video series Utopia, which aired for one season in 2020.
