Toy Story 5 is in the works, and Tim Allen and Tom Hanks have officially been asked to reprise their lead roles.
Allen, who voiced Buzz Lightyear in all four movies in the franchise, shared the exciting news while appearing on The Tonight Show on Tuesday, Nov. 21. Hanks, of course, voiced Woody in the movies.
“Bob Iger, head of Disney, said it was on,” he said. “He actually said it was going to happen. They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it.”
Disney actually announced Toy Story 5 in February of this year. According to ScreenRant, the project had already been in pre-production for some time at that point.
But don’t get excited about Buzz and Woody returning to the screen just yet. Tim Allen wouldn’t confirm if he’s going to reprise his role. However, he did show some major interest. Allen didn’t speak on Hanks’ interest.
“For people like me, it’s just like — I’m a sci-fi buff. You wonder if four was too many, is five too much?” he asked.
“According to the scuttlebutts, the writer that’s doing it wrote one of the better ones and he said,” he continued. “‘If I didn’t get this right, I wouldn’t do it.’ So it could be a very, very interesting way to reunite it.”
Tim Allen Offers Plot For ‘Toy Story 5’
The fourth movie, which came out in 2019, ultimately gave Buzz and Woody a conclusion. After saying their goodbyes, Woody and Bo Peep rode off into the sunset, and Buzz decided to stay with Bonnie. So the writers would have to find an organic way to bring them back together.
“I don’t know if this is where the story is going,” he said. “But what if the whole story was through Andy as an adult? [He] has children, and they just happen to be online, and the kid goes, ‘Have you ever seen this toy?’ and Andy sees that Buzz has got a hand missing and they’re selling these vintage toys, and Andy goes and gathers all the toys up. He has to go out and find each one of them and put them back together, bring them back to his house, and start the whole thing over again with his son.”
