Although the Star Wars franchise has dominated the box office and Disney+ in recent years, there is one prequel star that hasn’t been asked to make a return.
Among those who were part of the Star Wars prequels that have returned in various roles include Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Hayden Christensen (Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader), and Ahmed Best (originally Jar Jar Binks but returns as Jedi Master Kelleran Beq). However, the prequel’s leading lady, Natalie Portman, has not been approached to reprise her role as Padmé Amidala.
There are obvious factors to this. The key factor is being that her story has already been told in the prequel films. Her death came at the end of the prequel’s third and final film, Revenge of the Sith. In the film, she loses the will to live after giving birth to the twins, Luke and Leia. This was also after her husband, Anakin was thought to be dead after his iconic fight with Obi-Wan Kenobi on the molten Outer Rim planet Mustafar.
Note – While Obi-Wan Kenobi does die in A New Hope after his final fight with now Darth Vader, Disney brought back McGregor to reprise his prequel role to show what happened to the lone Jedi following Order 66.
During a recent appearance on Watch What Happens Live, Portman stated she is open to returning to the Star Wars franchise. “It was the first time I worked digitally,” she explained. “I don’t think anyone was shooting that way then. It was my first time working with a green screen. It was a whole new set of skills to pick up and a whole new world to enter.”
Natalie Portman Recall Director Taika Waititi Asking Her to Appear in His Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Film Thinking She Was Never in the Franchise Before
Meanwhile, Natalie Portman spoke about the awkward conversation she had with Taika Waititi about the Star Wars franchise. He is currently working on a Star Film movie. The filmmaker asked her if she wanted to star in the project. However, he forgot she had already starred in the franchise.
“He says he did [forget] because he like asked me if I wanted to be in a Star Wars movie,” she explained. “And I was like, ‘I was.’ I thought he was joking. He’s such a joker that I thought it was a joke. And then afterward he said in some interview that he was like cringing afterward.”
Waititi previously directed Portman in Thor: Love and Thunder. He told Rolling Stone in 2022 about the awkward conversation. “Natalie said to me, ‘What do you do next?’” Waititi explained. “And I said, ‘I’m trying to work on a Star Wars thing. Have you ever wanted to be in a Star Wars movie?’ She said, ‘I’ve been in Star Wars movies.’ I forgot about those ones.”
