‘The Waterboy’: Beloved Adam Sandler Film Premiered 25 Years Ago Today

Adam Sandler’s beloved comedy film, The Waterboy, first hit theaters on November 6th, 1998. The film, which starred Sandler, Fairuza Balk, Henry Winkler, and Kathy Bates, is officially 25 years old.

In the film, Sandler plays “Bobby Boucher,” a 31-year-old man who still lives at home with his overprotective mother. Boucher, a waterboy for a local college football team, accidentally discovers that he has the skills needed to be a star on the football field. However, he must hide his football-playing adventures from his mother to avoid worrying her.

And, of course, he finds love during all of this, too. Fairuza Balk plays “Vicki Vallencourt,” Sandler’s love interest in the film. Vallencourt is an astrologist who is just as wacky (and fun) as all of the other characters we see on screen.

The Waterboy was made with a modest 23 million dollar budget. The film went on to gross over 190 million dollars at the box office, making it a huge success. It’s without a doubt one of the most beloved movies of the late 90s and one of Sandler’s funniest films to date.

Adam Sandler Recently Brought Back His Character From ‘The Waterboy’

Anyone who has ever seen The Waterboy remembers Bobby Boucher’s iconic voice. It’s pretty similar to Sandler’s other character voices, but just different enough to be unique to Boucher. Sandler recently brought back that voice to help promote Henry Winkler’s new memoir, Being Henry: The Fonz… and Beyond.

In a video Sandler posted to X (formerly Twitter), Sandler reads from a copy of the book in the voice, name-dropping “Mr. Coach Kline,” Winkler’s character in the film. He then encourages everyone to pick up a copy of Winkler’s new memoir for themselves.

Winkler once called Sandler “a brilliant, brilliant creator.” After the duo worked together in The Waterboy, they linked back up Sandler’s 2006 film Click.
