‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Star Dermot Mulroney Teases Potential Sequel

Dermot Mulroney is ready to bring on a sequel with Julia Roberts to the 1997 romcom hit, My Best Friend’s Wedding. During the premiere of his latest film Anyone But You in New York City on Monday, Mulroney expressed his excitement for the possibility of a long-awaited follow-up.

“Yeah, no, I’m in!” Mulroney told Entertainment Tonight. “I’m thrilled to hear Julia’s finally, you know, coming to her senses.” Mulroney’s response follows Roberts’ recent mention of My Best Friend’s Wedding as a film she would happily consider making a sequel for.

During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen that aired Thursday, the Oscar-winning actress was asked about making a sequel to one of her movies. Without hesitation, she confidently shared her choice. “That’s a really good question and I’ve never been asked it,” Roberts remarked before choosing My Best Friend’s Wedding

Dermot Mulroney Perked at the Idea of a ‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’ Sequel

Dermot Mulroney was thrilled to hear her pick. “I was amazed to hear her kind compliments this weekend,” the Young Guns star told ET of Roberts. “You know I would love to work with her any day of the week, month or year.”

Released in June 1997, the comedy became a worldwide box-office sensation. Directed by P.J. Hogan, it tells the story of Jules, a food journalist who realizes her long-standing affection for her best friend Michael (played by Dermot Mulroney) when he announces his engagement to Kimmy (played by Cameron Diaz). Determined to win his heart, Jules embarks on a four-day mission to disrupt the wedding. She resorts to a fake engagement with her gay best friend George (played by Rupert Everett) out of sheer desperation.

Jules’ endeavors prove fruitless as the film concludes with the joyful union of Kimmy and Michael. However, Jules nearly disrupts the wedding when she confesses her love to Michael. She ultimately finds solace in a dance with George during the wedding reception.

However, the depth of the characters and their intricate dynamics provide ample material for a sequel, as Roberts pointed out. “There’s so many people in it,” Julia Roberts told Andy Cohen. “[I would want] to see what they’re doing and how Kimmy and Michael’s marriage is going…” When asked by another fan about Michael’s choice, Roberts remained loyal to her character and stood firmly by her decision. “Well, I mean, of course, Jules,” the Steel Magnolias star insisted. “But he married Kimmy!”

Mulroney’s latest film, Anyone But You, will hit theaters on December 22nd. Meanwhile, Roberts’ newest movie, Leave the World Behind, is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
