Beloved fantasy comedy Freaky Friday hit the big screen 20 years ago and could soon receive a sequel, according to Mark Harmon.
Starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, Freaky Friday follows a mother and daughter who see each other in a new light after switching bodies thanks to a pair of magic fortune cookies. Mark Harmon plays Ryan, the fiancé of Tess (Curtis) who’s desperate to win over her two children ahead of their rapidly approaching wedding.
During Monday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Harmon hinted that he could be stepping back into the role of Ryan sooner or later. If Jamie Lee Curtis wants him to, that is.
While on the topic of Freaky Friday, Mark Harmon said, “The first one is because Jamie’s talking about it, and you know Jamie…”
“Yeah, I love Jamie!” host Kelly Clarkson cut in.
“I do too,” Harmon agreed. “And I’ve known her since she was 15, and if she’s talking about it, then it’ll happen, because all things happen.”
It’s possible Mark Harmon and Jamie Lee Curtis have had talks of a Freaky Friday sequel amongst themselves, but Curtis also put her desire for a sequel right out in the open! Earlier this month, Curtis took to Instagram to drop a Freaky Friday 2 teaser herself.
“Too late. YOU GREW UP and SO BEAUTIFULLY!” Curtis wrote alongside a current-day picture of herself and Lindsay Lohan. “Well, it’s Friday, and the strike is over so hopefully, we can switch places again in the near future!”
Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis on Board for a ‘Freaky Friday’ Sequel
The stars of Freaky Friday are more than a little interested in a sequel, it seems, as the most recent mentions of a return to the world of the 2003 film aren’t their only comments.
In May, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis did a joint interview with The New York Times in honor of the film’s 20th anniversary. During the conversation, both actors expressed a keen interest in a Freaky Friday sequel.
They admitted, however, that they’re “leaving it in the hands that be.” Furthermore, they wouldn’t agree to just any sequel. The movie would have to be “something that people would absolutely adore,” Curtis explained.
And back in February, Jamie Lee Curtis mentioned the film again, telling Variety, “It’s going to happen. Without saying there’s anything officially happening, I’m looking at you in this moment and saying, ‘Of course it’s going to happen.’ It’s going to happen.”
Obviously, both Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are quite a bit older than they were in the 2003 film. But that’s no problem for Curtis, who has the perfect plot in mind: she’ll play an “old grandma”!
“So then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma, who is still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon,” Curtis said on an episode of The View. “And simply, I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today.”
“I wanna be a helicopter parent in today’s world, as an old lady,” she added.
