How Arnold Schwarzenegger Tricked Sylvester Stallone Into This Disastrous Comedy

It’s hard to imagine nowadays, but long-time buddies Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone used to be bitter rivals. Perhaps the height of this intense professional feud was when the Austrian Oak bamboozled Sly into taking a role that ended up being one of his biggest blunders.

1992’s Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot pairs Stallone with The Golden Girls star Estelle Getty. The film revolves around a gruff police sergeant (Stallone) whose mother (Getty) visits him, determined to improve his life despite causing him considerable embarrassment. As a birthday present, she purchases a machine gun from a mysterious van, subsequently meddling in both his professional and romantic affairs. Eventually, she even assists him in solving a case he’s working on.

The film was a box office bomb and won Stallone a Golden Raspberry Award for ‘Worst Actor’. However, Sly only joined the project upon learning of his rival Arnold Schwarzenegger’s interest, unknowingly entangling himself in the intricate web of deception woven by the Terminator.

“I had heard Schwarzenegger was going to do [Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot],” Stallone admitted to The Hollywood Reporter last month. ‘I’m going to beat him to it.’ I think he set me up.”

The Conan the Barbarian legend owned up the the allegation when pressed. “It’s 100% true. In those days, we did all kinds of crazy things to get ahead in our rivalry,” Schwarzenegger said. “Luckily for us and everyone else, today, we root for each other. Thank God, because we sure don’t ever need another Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.”

“I read the script, and it was a piece of [crap],” Arnold told Jimmy Kimmel back in 2019. “Let’s be honest. I say to myself, ‘I’m not going to do this movie.’ Then they went to Sly, and Sly called me, ‘Have they ever talked to you about doing this movie?’” he added. “And I said, yes, I was thinking about doing it. This is a really brilliant idea, this movie. When he heard that, because he was in competition, he said, ‘Whatever it takes, I’ll do the movie.’ And, of course, the movie went major into the toilet.”

Having co-starred in Escape Plan and the first three installments of The Expendables franchise, these two action cinema veterans have set aside their long-running feud. However, let’s not forget that Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot stands as a testament to Schwarzenegger’s determination to emerge victorious, no matter the cost.
