‘Godzilla Minus One’ Stomps Past $100 Million, Gets Special Black and White Re-Release

‘Godzilla Minus One’ Stomps Past $100 Million, Gets Special Black and White Re-Release

Godzilla Minus One savagely rampages back onto the box office chart in a striking black and white re-release. The latest Toho film portrays Godzilla wreaking havoc on post-World War II Japan. It marks the 33rd Japanese-language installment and the 38th overall in the franchise. Since its debut in December 2023, the movie has shattered multiple records, emerging as the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film released in domestic theaters.

According to Deadline, Godzilla Minus One is expected to rake in $2.5 million by the end of the weekend. The film, now re-released in a black-and-white edition titled Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color, has experienced a remarkable 264% surge in its weekly earnings. This places it at No. 10 on the weekend chart, marking the first time it has entered the Top 10 in four weeks since it claimed the 10th spot over the Christmas 3-day weekend.

It concludes two weeks of remarkable success for the new blockbuster monster film. The project achieved the impressive milestone of $100 million worldwide as of January 17, solidifying its position as the highest-grossing Godzilla movie from Japan. Remarkably, the film was made on a budget of approximately $15 million.

However, the king of the monsters has always done well when Hollywood wrestles it from Toho. Godzilla Minus One has earned less than any English-language Godzilla film, with the 1998 Godzilla being the lowest-grossing at $376 million.

The synergy for the classic monster seems unstoppable. When the 2024 Oscar nominations were announced on January 23, Godzilla Minus One was nominated for Best Visual Effects. It’s the first time in the franchise’s 70-year history that a Godzilla movie has received an Academy Award nomination.
