Gary Oldman is highly respected as one of the finest actors around yet even he believes his work fell short in the Harry Potter films. Oldman played Sirius Black in three of them, ending with 2007’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. He looks back on it all through the lens of introspection.
“I think my work is mediocre in it,” Oldman said in an interview with Josh Horowitz for the Happy Sad Confused podcast. “No, I do. Maybe if I had read the books like Alan (Rickman, aka Prof. Snape), if I had got ahead of the curve, if I had known what’s coming, I honestly think I would have played it differently.”
Oldman does appear to be quite a self-critic when it comes to his work. He’s very careful to not get a big head in looking over the films that he’s made. “I’ll tell you what it is,” he said. “It’s like anything if I sat and watched myself in something and said, ‘My god, I’m amazing,’ that would be a very sad day because you want to make the next thing better.”
Gary Oldman Took ‘Harry Potter’ Role For His Kids
In his films, Oldman has appeared to play up to his characters. His work has been recognized by critics and fans, giving him pretty high marks for his efforts.
Maybe Oldman looked upon his work in the Harry Potter films as a way to make ends meet. He talked about this period of his life during an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Deadline reports.
“At 42 years old, I woke up divorced, and I had custody of these boys, and so that, in itself, was…that was hard,” he said. “Because there was a shift in the industry where a lot of productions were being [filmed in], it was Hungary, Budapest, Prague, Australia, you know, all of these places.”
The actor did admit to Barrymore that he “turned down a lot of work.” That was so that he could be with his children. “I tell you, the two — Batman (where he played Commissioner Gordon) and Harry Potter — really, they saved me,” he said. “Because it meant that I could do the least amount of work for the most amount of money and then be home with the kids.”
Actor Counts Academy Award Among His Honors
In his career, Oldman has won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. Let’s not forget a Primetime Emmy Award for his work on Friends back in 2001. His career path shows him to be one of the busiest actors around. That’s the case even as he was selective around his film work for some time.
Besides film work, Oldman has spent time honing his craft in British theaters. He also has been active as a filmmaker, musician, and voice actor. He’s come a long way from playing Sid Vicious in the movie Sid & Nancy.
But if anyone is going to critique his work, then it might be up to him. His fans will be looking forward to seeing what project is next for Oldman.
