Eddie Murphy is returning as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop 4, and Netflix dropped the first image from the upcoming sequel. Apparently, Murphy’s character hasn’t updated his wardrobe since 1994’s third installment of the franchise. The image depicts Foley raising his hands while wearing a Detroit Lions jacket. He is confronted by two police officers, while a crowd of bystanders records the incident on their phones.
Eddie Murphy makes a comeback to reprise the iconic Axel role, nearly three decades after the release of Beverly Hills Cop 3. Directed by Mark Molloy, the belated sequel also stars Kevin Bacon and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Meanwhile, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser, and Bronson Pinchot reprise their characters from previous installments. According to Deadline, in the winter of 2019, the franchise transitioned from Paramount to Netflix.
Originally conceived as a vehicle for Sylvester Stallone (who turned it down to do Cobra) Beverly Hills Cop was one of the biggest hits of 1984. The film raked in $234 million at the U.S. box office. Obviously, it proved Eddie Murphy was a sure way to get butts in seats. The original film spawned two sequels in 1987 and 1994.
Eddie Murphy Plans to Follow Up ‘Beverly Hills Cop 4’ with Some Interesting Projects
Meanwhile, discussions are underway for Eddie Murphy to portray the legendary George Clinton, leader of Parliament-Funkadelic, in an upcoming biopic. Not only will Murphy star in the film, but he will also take on the role of producer alongside John Davis, Catherine Davis, and John Fox from Davis Entertainment.
Clinton is often cited as the Godfather of Funk, comparable to James Brown and Sly Stone as the foremost pioneers of this musical genre. Reportedly, the film is a passion project for Murphy.
Murphy collaborated with Davis on the critically acclaimed Netflix film Dolemite Is My Name. He received much praise for his portrayal of the unconventional Blaxploitation film star, Rudy Ray Moore.
Following this success, Murphy went on to star in Coming 2 America, the highly anticipated sequel to his beloved 1988 comedy classic. Coming 2 America wasn’t well received, with an audience score of 38% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it did establish that the comedy legend was open to belated sequels.
Of course, this isn’t the only sequel to a beloved franchise that Murphy has in the works. Reportedly, plans for Shrek 5 are underway. Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley drops on Netflix in 2024.
